hi all im new on here, just wondering whats stopping the air getting to the smic with the cupra bumper on. To look at them the cupra looks to have a bigger grill shouldnt this allow more are to get to the smic. If not is there a way of directing the air to the smic without taking the fog light out

The fog-light and surround blocks the air-flow. In the original FR bumper there are air-intakes at the same location as the SMIC is directly behind it.

If you open the bonnet you should be able to see the SMIC away in the corner.
I ran mine for a while with the fog-light out but it looked terrible!

Also the left part of the grill on the Cupra bumper is solid whereas the rest is mesh, think this is because of the towing eye cover but seems silly. I know someone on here drilled the solid bits out but not something i would start to do.

I never took my bumper off myself so im not sure whats behind it and if theres another way to direct airflow to the SMIC. I searched this before and only answer seems to be replacing SMIC with a FMIC.

The new face-lift FR bumper would probably be a better bet....

how much air do they need whould a few holes inthe fog light surround be enough or could you direct the air from under the bumper

Anyone know whether the new FR bumpers are the same visually as the cupra bumpers? Basically I want to know if I could fit them to my pre-facelift FR without fitting a FMIC and whether I could still mount a FMIC at a later date?

They look roughly the same apart from the fog light area which is slightly larger to allow the air around the fog light to the side mounted intercooler. i was also wondering about fitting the fmic and i dont think it should be a problem as its roughtly the same.

Yes you can retro fit phase 2 bumprs on to the phase 1. The difference is quite big between the Cupra and the new FR. For one thing the Cupra bumper extends the length of the car by a good inch to 2 inches. It also comes down a lot nicer on the front than the FR one.

You could fit a fmic after too, but if you use the seatsport one then you may need to trim the inside of the bumper slighty.

I was under the impression that the cupra bumpers and the new fr bumpers were the same but I'm glad to be corrected! looks like I'll have to keep saving and get the FMIC and cupra bumpers at the same time.

Useless dealers! Just take the part numbers from this thread and ask them to order for you!

you can get away without, but you would need to leave it standard engine wise, and come summer you may get a few limp modes if you cain it too much, Or another option is to just mesh the foglight grills and opt to leave the foglights out, then you will get some direct air on to the side mount

So has many people fitted the cupra bumpers to their cars? and did you get the fmic? and was it worth it. I'm in the stage where i want them but not sure if its worth all that money!?

On my pre-facelift FR TDI, i changed to the Cupra front bumper and ran with it for 3 months with no problems but I think it felt a little more tardy though it may have been in my head!
I tried it with the fog-light out but it looked terrible i thought...

IMO the Cupra bumper is a Lot nicer than the new FR one as the large grill area in t he middle is wider and deeper and looks much meaner especailly on a
Red or Yellow version..

Spyke, yea I did, i traded it in like that for the Leon.

I didnt have the original FR bumper to replace it as someone had reversed into the corner of it which gave me an excuse to change to the Cupra bumpers...

I seen it the other day and was speaking to the bloke who bought it... The dealer sold it on with the same Cupra bumper, obviously not telling the customer of any potential air-flow problems....
