Hope everyone is keeping safe.

I just thought I would share this to 1. see if anyone has encountered this 2. raise it in case it helps someone in the future.

TL : DR
Cupra 300 didn't show any warning on dash/ECU after coolant leak and thermostat failure, was only detected at 20K service.

So I have a MY67 Mk3 Cupra 300.
It was due its 20k service just before the lockdown and my appointment got cancelled.

I took it in on Friday all had been running well, after an hour or two the service centre phone me and tell me apparently the thermostat housing has been leaking for a long while and nearly all of the coolant has drained from the system. Which resulted in a burnt and contaminated coolant bottle and new thermostat and housing.

Apparently this is a common fault, which is quite crazy, but they replaced all of the parts under the warranty without question, the cynic in me was expecting an argument over whether it was covered or not.

All relatively normal-ish so far, but what has left me and the dealer scratching their heads is that there where no temperature warning lights active to indicate any issues at and the car ECU hadn't detected any faults, either.
They have said they don't have a clue why there where no warnings and are putting it down to a random anomaly and have just said keep an eye on it.

It all seems quite strange, but thought i would put it out in the wild to give you guys something to ponder.

Stay Safe everyone.

I’m currently going throw a battle with my dealer over coolant leak, possible pump failure.

First reported in my warranty period and the garage didn’t fix it and now it’s reappeared there trying to charge / seeing me for good will

I know we often assume the car will ‘tell’ us via warning lamps in the instrument cluster if there’s something that requires attention. However, I personally, don’t rely on dashboard warning lights to tell me when fluid levels are getting low, as there’s a danger that a) the warning light doesn’t work or b) there actually isn’t one as the OP discovered.

I’ve made physically checking under bonnet fluid levels and checking the tyre pressures part of my regular routine when I wash my car - usually every 2-3 weeks. It only takes a few minutes and minimises the risk of what could be an expensive outcome if the car failed to ‘tell’ me that a critical fluid level was at or below the minimum level.

As the saying goes; ‘prevention is better than cure’.

Also i believe the owners handbook tells you to check these things on a regular basis, at one time it used to be weekly!

Oh I agree totally, and will be the first to admit Im an idiot for not checking more frequently. I can go a month or two without fully checking oil levels etc.

Is a just a wierd scenario that she will shout at me for getting out of the car with the key in my pocket, but not that there's a massive failure with stuff burning, not even sure why I didn't pick up on it.

The fact that the service guys said that there should have been a warning too. All just a bit strange.

Testiment to the VW engine durability though. Haha.

Ah well we live and learn I suppose.
