Mini service done today!

Hello everyone,

I did a mini service on my 07 Cupra today. I change the oil every 6 months but today I thought i'd have a crack at the other bits.

So today I changed spark plugs, air filter, oil filter and oil. All went pretty well, no major problems, although the engine cover was a bit of a pain to get off.

I wanted to change the spark plugs, oil filter and air filter because at the first dealer service I had, they changed none of these. I thought this was unusual as all my previous cars had the above done every service.

What I wanted to point out is that the spark plugs i pulled out were very black and sooty and the air filter was very dirty. (I must also point out that i'm not a high mileage driver, I've only done 10k in 17 months) I find this a bit odd, as they were not changed on the dealer service. Maybe someone could shed some light on why these fairly critical parts are not changed until the 2nd year service.

Even though new spark plugs don't make a major difference, I found the engine start is much smoother and not as cluncky, maybe it's just me!

So to conclude I'd want the air filter, spark plugs and oil filter changed at every service.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Thanks for reading!

So do they change the oil, but not the oil filter at the first service???

I got my first service a couple of weeks back and they put oil and an oil filter on the bill.

I'm gonna do an air filter on mine in the spring. Was it hard to do??

Well as far as I can see, the oil filter was not changed on my first service, the plasic housing for the oil filter looked as though it had not been touched. when I screwed it off I did leave some scratch marks on the plastic.(I was really careful too) But I could be wrong as I don't have my invoice.

The only thing that stumped me at the start was how to get the engine cover off, once you have disconnected the the Maf(could be Mas) sensor, uncoupled the air intake at both ends and detached the pipe along the left hand side of the cover you pretty have to much have to be brave and pull!
It's secured by these pop off rubber bungs, then it's really easy, remove the heat sheild(4 screws) the the filter housing screws(about 8) and thats it.

Thanks

1st and second and i think 3rd cupra services are just an oil change!! and a a few "checks" nothing actually replaced... no sure about oil filter, but sparks and air filter etc are not touched untill atleast 4th service..

Oil and filter are the only replacement parts on the 10k, 20k & 30k services! The checks carried out vary however!

There is a special tool for removing the oil filter (normally leaves no marks), cannot believe an oil filter was not changed!

The spark plugs and air filter is replaced at 60k or 6 years

The pollen filter is replaced at 40k or four years.

Fuel filter is life of the vehicle unless the system is opened, brake fluid is 2 years and coolant is 4!

Cambelt is 180,000 km (111,846 miles) or four years, whichever comes first!

This only applies to BWJ engines (Leon Cupras), FR's with BWA may vary!

Nice post. Thanks.:D

I did check to see if my oil filter had been changed as the oil was not totally clean. I'm told this is because some old oil will still be trapped in areas of the engine.

There was some oil around the plastic filter casing but never seen any scratches, so I take it it was changed. The garage gets a good name so I don't doubt they did it.

Would changing the plugs and air filter earlier affect warranty???

As long as they are the correct spec as dictated by SEAT you will be fine.

Genuine parts....you can never go wrong (no one would know).

You can have no detrimental affect by replacing service items early, as long as your workmanship meets the required standards!

Kind regards,

Actually it is you that is incorrect, spark plugs 4yrs 40k, Air filter listed at 60k 6yrs but would probably be replaced at 40k. Pollen filter also at 40k & oil filter every service.
Lets not forget possible software updates that are checked every time the vehicle goes for service.

I m not going to argue but who is sat in front of the system used to build the service sheets!

SEAT state as I have above.....

Software updates are only installed if a customer complaint exists!

No wonder SEAT Dealers are referred to stealers if they are getting fleeced for £50 spark plugs 20k miles too early!

Read your MST manual!! (only applicable to those in a dealer).

Yep and it has nothing to do with the servicing of vehicles!!

SEAT Service Quality Management System.

It is all to do with training, corporate identity, workshop tooling and training, levels and knowledge of staff base, premises and cleanliness!!

It is how SEAT UK rate their Dealers for conforming to their franchise agreement!

There is nothing in the 400+ page manual about servicing a car!

You need the MST manual!

Kind regards!
