Low MPG - 1.2 12V

Lui

Guest
Hi, bought a 1.2 12V Ibiza on Friday and I'm not happy with the MPG I'm getting.

120 miles from £20 at 112.9 = 33.87 MPG

Anyone else getting this low or is something up here?

Probably around 50 motorway miles rest was <50 MPH

Doing 70 on the Motorway was around 4000 RPM

My last car was a diesel so I'm not familiar with petrol RPMs

My one managed 297 miles on £40.00...

whats the mileage and year also when was it last serviced...

I found on mine when i did shortish journeys it wasn't that economical but if i went on a long run I.E motorway run it was realy good on fuel..

Before mine died i did have a problem with short journey restarts and the fuel economy was simular to yours i am going to change out the engine temp sensor and change the fuel filter to see if this makes a difference when its fixed.

It's (over)due for a service now. I'm gonna get it checked over when it's getting done.

I reset the trip last night just after putting another £20.01[:@] to see how many it gets without the motorway

id give it a good oil change, proper fully synthetic oil(non of that cheap crap) check sparks, tyre pressure, air, fuel filters etc and see if thats helps.

This has come up before about the 1.2 and not so good MPG. Other than a service i think it was concluded that the engine just needs to be worked that extra bit harder and thus reduces the Mpg.

I have the same car and had this problem when i got it but have got used to driving it now, basically as soon as you are on a steep hill put it in neutral, and change gear at:

1st-up to 5 MPH
2nd upto 15-20
3rd up to 30
4th up to 35-40 and then 5th for anything over it seems to have helped even if it makes driving dull!

120 miles from £20 sounds about right, I usually get 300 out of a full tank (around £50) or 350 at the absolute maximum

Heh I know, its annoying :p I mainly got my 1.2 for MPG as I read it was supposed to be near 50mpg, I find that hard to believe. I'll be going diesel next time though, a nice PD130 will go down nicely

I think you've got a well looked after car there kidinspace :) no matter how much I service mine I can't get even near to that :p

I'd probably keep my car a bit longer I had that sort of MPG

Yeah but I bet you paid slightly more for your car... :p

The handbook for my 1.2 SX says to change up gear at 2000 revs for economy... That's hard with the ratio in 1st gear, your doing 4000 by the time you're going about 2MPH!

I do about the same in mine, and thats 1.8T.

Kind of kicking myself knowing that :D

Mind you this is my first proper car and I bought it to be sensible i.e no speed less accidents :p seems to have paid off haha

Going FR/Cupra next time though :)

Haha yeh so true . Plus if you change up at 2000 rpm on a motorway / bypass you might reach 70mph by the time your coming off (just!)

I get around 100 miles for every £10. Use Shell fuel most the time.
