Lots of problems

Hiya guys, I'm brand new to this site, cars, seats and more XD

Recently turned 18 and decided i should start driving, Got a Seat Ibiza Salsa (it has salsa stickers, probably not a good thing) i think its a 1996.

Anyway, it had been sitting at my great uncles house outside his garage under a tree for a good 3 years, With mould and moss and algae all over it. There was no battery, the engine was covered in cobwebs and snails and the paint was not visible.

There was another problem, it would not run well, the last time it was started it drove 3 miles and conqued out, It starts, it runs and sounds fine, but it wants to stop, the revs drop and it goes.

Anyway, i have a spare engine to use if needed and a spare gearbox, clutch etc, well basically a whole front end spare. There is also a brand new head gasket to use if needed, My great uncle thought this was the problem so he got one. I just finished cleaning it up T-Cuting and glossing it and it looks amazing, but theres a few things i need to get sorted,

Has anyone got a clue what the problem could be with the engine, My dad and i are looking into changing the head gasket, and the coil pack just in case. I would appreciate it if anyone knew anything else this could be.

Also as we put a new battery in it, and turned the ignition the airbag light came on, and it stays on. I think it said inno 2 aswell, which i think the manual said was have it serviced.

I admit there's a few things to do before she runs, but it wont be long.

First thing to do would be to clean the throttle body out. If that is all gunked up it could be causing the revs/cutting out problem.

Then before changing the head gasket I would change spark plugs, leads and give the car a proper service. Then you can cancel the 'IN 02' you get on the dash.

The abs light will probably require the error code clearing using vagcat. That sounds like it could be a dirty/faulty sensor. Give the sensors a good blast with a pressure washer to clear all the dirt etc off them.

Ok thanks i'll get right onto it tomorrow, Hopefully i'll have her running in no time, My dad's been working on cars for donkeys years so he knows pretty much everything on most cars, but every car has some differences, He works by the process of ilimination, but asking always helps,

Does it die suddenly (i.e. an electrical type fault), or like its run out of fuel (i.e. spurting and chugging a bit before it goes)? And how long did you have to wait before being able to drive again?

Mine was dying suddenly after half an hour, and it turned out to be the crank sensor which sends the timing signal to your ECU. I had the revs drop to zero instantly, backfiring once as the fuel was dumped to the exhaust when the signal went, but no spurting like a fuel starvation issue. I also had a ticking noise from the ECU relay in the fuse box (Relay 30 - it helps to hear if you take out the glove compartment if yours is on the drivers side.) I could drive it again after about 10 minutes, but only for another 15 mins or so before it would do it again.

The crank sensor had died simply becuase it was so old - the plastic had disintegrated and there were visible bare wires. Its a pain to check though, since its behind the oil filter and worse still, the bolt for it is behind the front engine mount plate that the starter motor bolts to.

Hi guys, learnt a lot today, me my dad and my brother decided to take things further, took off the air filter and looked at the throttle body, cleaned it up, checked spark plugs, (surprised it was running) renewed them, checked distributor cap, (surprised it was working- had eaten itsself to bits, well the rotary arm had, sorry if i get some technical terms wrong. Also checked other things, head gasket seems to be gone as there's oil in the water, Tomorrow the rotary arm arrives and we'll strip the engine and fix everything that needs it, she'll be running tomorrow night, At te moment she runs a lot better, she doesn't shut herself off but there is some misfiring.

I can't imagine how it would feel to wake up in the morning and be sure that she'd start*!






*this is more joke than anything else, after half a can of carb cleaner down the TB i've not had any starting issues for months

Sometimes I think the trick is to leave one thing that needs fixing to save the onset of more things breaking....

haha, well i looks like i will have a spare gearbox and a spare engine for sale. the benefit of fixing everything is it will work hehe, and chances are it will take a while for something to go wrong, i can be a bit impatient so having it sitting there is the problem, I noticed that today when we couldn't fix it all because we had to sort out the shed haha.

Well tomorrow it's definate and it will be done. If anyones looking for some parts chances are i'll have a tonne for sale.

Sorry i haven't been on much. just got so much going on.

She's running, but doesn't idle well, we're going to change a few of the sensors and so on. As the wheels were quite badly rusted i got some nice alloys. and have got red brake calipers to suit the car. I'm not into modifiying my car too much, just basics to improve looks so its just wheels and exhaust XD

old fuel will cause it to run like a pig, try and empty as much of it as possible then get alot of super unleaded, will make a world of difference i reckon.

Yeah i thought so too, i checked the fuel filter, it seemed to be blocked so i bought a new one. it runs better. theres still a small problem. im going to change a few other things tomorrow. the injector rail and distributor cap. and the cat converter.

the fuel is all new too, put half a tank in,

great club by the way very helpfull were almost there will get some pics up soon cars looking great after 3 yrs under a tree ,

just this damb idle issue ,, but after reading faq will change all vacum hoses see if that helps ,
