Loosing water

Hi my dads in a bit of a pickel, wot to do, he got a 1.9 tdi 110hbp and lossing water so took it to seat and they said the head has gone plus timing belt needs doing so they told him to not bother fixing it down to cost, so i took it to good cheap garage compared to seat and they did tests and they would TRY to fix it With the head being skimmed and new bits and bobs + timing belt all for 500 quid BUT they said it might not work. only 50% chance of working other than that the car is in good condition with 120000 miles. Should my dad take the risk of lossing 500 quid or scrap it. Some engine advice much needed, has the engine had to much damage to be repaired?

depends if he can afford to lose £500 if it all goes wrong.... you could spend £££££ on another car or just £500 on getting this one fixed or £500 plus £££££ if all goes wrong.

Surely you can buy a new engine for £500 and get them swapped over? :)

I mean second hand new not brand new.

nice 1 thats what ive been trying to tell him cause thay havent got ££££ to spend on a different car the only thing stopping getting it repaired is the garages telling him it might have to much damage already done down to the design of the type of engine, a bit more high tech now days

have you taken it to other places just to see what they say ?? may be a case of the garage not being 100% sure if they can do the repair. i would ask a few more places

I'd guess the garage have said £500 if the head has not been warped due to beeing driven with the gasket gone.

It needs to come off to check hence the cost and risk of it being buggered.
