Looking to buy a 2.0TDi

Hi all,

First of all, let me introduce myself; I'm a deflector from UK-MKIVs.net (I currently own an ageing MK4 Golf TDI with a dodgy turbo...).

I'm looking at buying a 2.0TDI Leon. Nothing too fancy (like the FR etc) as I'm still relatively young, but I've been to look at, and test-drive, a Reference Sport which I really liked.

Sorry if it's been asked before (I looked through the first few pages of posts) but does anyone have any tips about the sort of things to look out for? For instance, when the cam belt should be changed, and any other bits that are prone to failure. I'm looking at 50-70,000 mile vehicles at the moment.

The dealer tried to explain to me the difference between the trim levels, but utterly confused me!

Last question - the stereo looked fairly 'integrated' into the dash... Is its quality okay? And is it possible to retrofit a standard aux-in socket to connect an iPod etc?

Many thanks, sorry for all the questions!

Fred

One problem you got to look out for is the prone "cracked head" however this can easily be solved with a bottle of K-seal :) cambelt should be 50k or every 4 years iirc. On the stereo im not sure in the differences as mine has the satnav and bluetooth integrated. Some of the newer leons already have a n aux socket for an ipod/mp3 player :D

The cam belt on a 2.0TDI should be changed at 80k or every for 4 years, its an expensive job too. I've just had mine done along with an 80k service and it cost me 700 notes in total. The quality of the original stereo isn't bad but i'm not sure about the aux-in.

just to elaborate on that cylinder head issue.. Check the serial on the side of the head itself. If it reads 03G 103 308 A or 03G 103 308 B then it maybe prone to cracking. A more so than B
If its 03G 103 308 C then its more likely to be ok. I know this becasue mine was a 03G 103 308 B and mine needed replacing. Have to admit, devonmikeyboy helped me out there :) so much appreciated to him.

Other than the cylinder head issue, i hear about one or two people having blown turbo issues.
The dpf is something to concern yourself with on the FR model too. The 2.0 140pd doesnt have this problem.

Pretty much the general rules of TDIs apply here.
Cold starts: Avoid booting it from cold, give a few minutes after engine is upto running temp (90C) then give it some.
Hot stops: avoid booting it on that last 1 or 2 miles of your journey
Give the car a spirited run as often as you can to burn off soot and muck that builds up in the filters

Do that and your car and turbo will be more greatful long term :)

Thanks very much for your replies!

I would indeed be looking at the PD140 so wouldn't have to worry about the DPF.

Obviously the 140 is the same engine as in the MK5 Golf (Had one before with no problems) - are the ones in the Seats more prone to problems for some reason?!

Final question; can the Bluetooth module be added to any Mk2 Leon, or is it only certain years/trim levels?

Thanks again for your responses!

i have the pd140. the stereo is perfectly adequate for my needs, nice and loud and still clear cut sound.
i dont no about adding bluetooth to the stereo system itself but i installed a 'Parrot' which runs through the stereo etc and that works really well

hope this helps

Thanks for the reassurance about the stereo. It just seems that it would look 'wrong' if I were to change it as I'd need a huge fascia adapter!

Yeah, I'm an old hand at installing Parrots (they go in all our lorries) and I have one of the newer ones with iPod facility - a MKi9200 - in the Golf at the moment which I'm not overly impressed with, but I suppose it solves the aux-in and bluetooth problems in one go...

Timing Belts are only expensive if there taken to the wrong people! I've done a few of these timing belts now for mates and my own car and they are more simple than the older 1.9tdi engine. Timing belt for me to do has never been more than £300 inc parts and labour.

Hi

I have a 56 plate Leon FR and the audi system is pretty good. I was impressed with the quality and the aux for my iPod is perfect quality also. Handy as it redirects all my calls into the hands free system too.
