As subject. The 'box in my wife's '99 V 1.4S has a noisy bearing. I think the easiest thing to do is to replace it with a used one as it isn't a common failure (or is it?)

I'm not having much luck with PartFinder looking for one though so:

Does anyone know a specialist SEAT breaker?

Is it exactly the same 'box as in anything else? I'm thinking '99 Polo 1.4 (is that a Mk5?) or even Mk3 Golf 1.4.

Does anyone have one spare?

Thanks in advance for any help.

There's no F in Quality..
Nope, he's sold it ;) Not to me though! First place I tried when I was looking for one a few weeks ago !!! :D

I think Em's is just the clutch release bearing, so no great rush to get a replacement 'box.

Fen, just thought, it could be the clutch release bearing on yours......

Thanks guys. I don't think it's clutch release bearing as it doesn't get really noisy until 50mph+ and by 70 it's horrendous. Clutch up/down nor swerving around etc. has any effect hence it doesn't seem to be clutch or wheel bearing related. my guess is an output shaft bearing. Diganosis was confirmed when it was in at a local specialist for service on Saturday.

How soon are you coming down if you really don't mind a dirty great gearbox in the boot? We'd obviously award some beer tokens for your trouble. Failing that if you have the details of the scrappy maybe they'd ship or I could even take a run up there myself - I'm supposed to be taking the 944 to WRC Technologies at Silverstone to give it a run on the dyno soon and Kingsteignton - Silverstone - Derby - Kingsteignton isn't a lot worse than just the Silverstone trip.

Fen, Supposed to be down on the 7th April, but I might be getting the train down and the hiring a van to bring a bathroom suite back to Derby!

If not, I can bring it down then. Otherwise I 'm not sure when I'll be down next.

I'll try and find the details of the scrappy. Adams Autos I think they're called....'

I finally got round to checking - the Polo 'box supposedly has a different linkage, though I don't know if that can be changed or not.

Anyway, all things considered we just went out today and traded the Mk2 with its knackered 'box for a Mk4 1.2S instead.

Well it was, but the car needed a pair of front tyres and the driver's wing that was crumpled in a car park over 2 years ago still needed replaced, plus the tax is out on Friday. Realistically with all that fixed, plus the 'box, we were within £300 or less of the total value of the car and she wouldn't have kept it all that much longer. We got £250 less than CAP's good condition value for it (I got to see the book), which all things considered was a good deal and the Mk4 wasn't up for over the odds. OK so possibly we forgot to mention the noisy tranny...

This way she gets a car half the age with less than half the miles in a better colour with a CD player, air-con, a boot light and ABS plus 4 months tax on the screen a years MoT and 6 months warranty, and it's nicer to drive. Of course she didn't pay for it and that does mean I have bought 2 cars in 5 days.

Fen, there's one in a scrappy in Derby, £150 I got quoted when I enquired about it for Em's Ibiza.

It's an 085 'box out of a Mk4 Polo, but it's only done 49k apparently.

I 'could' bring it down with me when I come down next if you're interested.....

You can use a Golf Mk2 16v Gearbox, shouldn`t be expensive and better ratios. 2Y is the best code
