Logging Advice Needed

Cupraloon

Guest
I'm a bit new with this vag-com stuff, I've done the simple things like change alarm chirps, etc..

I've done a seach and cannot find any advice on how to actually do the logging, so if poss i'd like a blow by blow on how to do it properly, as i've recently fitted a smoothed air box and larger cold feed pipe and want to check what air flow i'm getting against some others log's.

I've had vag-com plugged in to the car, and cannot see any where within vag-com to do the logging, I've got version 311.2.

Cheers in advance,

True i didnt have a clue how to do it but manage after a few tries and abit of help from DPJ.

Log on to engine controller, then press measuring blocks.

003 and 020, then 115 and 031, then 118 and 032.
This gives you, airflow, actual timing, timing pull, requested boost, actual boost, target air fuel, actual airfuel, n75 duty, inlet temp, actual boost, and then finally fuel trims

(Best to do 2 at a time for acurate reads)

So basically that works out to be 3 laps. when you have selected your 2. you then press the log button at the bottom to begin logging.

On the next screen, choose a name you want to save file as. When ready to start recording, press start button, and when you finshed press stop, then done to go back to measure the next 2.

The file will be saved as a excel file format in the vag directory.

Hope this helps ;)

If you have a look on the Ross-Tech site, there are graphs you can paste your data into, to give you graphs for Specified and Actual boost, fuel mix and torque etc. You might find them useful.

I agree with Big Lad though, its difficult at first, trying to get some info from all the numbers you are left with but it gets easier after a few goes and some research into the values.

You aren't that far from me are you? Let me know if you need a hand mate!

Cheers for the replies guy's,

I'll give that ago today, just one probably daft question  obviously the ignition needs to be on as usual, but do you do the logging with the engine running, driving alone or stationary...

Longman thank for your offer I'll give you a shout if i can't figure it out

Cheers

The logging has to be done while going along.

Its best to do a run in 3rd and 4th to the red line (make sure you are on a private road so you don't break the speed limits!!)

You then use the data from accros the range from the measuring groups above.... That will give you an idea whether its all peachy!!

Thanks again Longman,

I'm just about to go out and give a go, so I'll let you know later on how i get on...

Ok guy's here is my "attempt" at my first log, I'm feeling a little daft  cos the only way to could get the thing up and viewable was to publish it to my web site
I just couldn't for the life of me get it to upload to this or any other site, including photobucket.....[:@]

it's ummm not very good, think i might need some :help:

nightmare...... I could really do with :drunk:

I think you can post them up here and use
Code:
at the start and then the same but with a slash before code, at the end

[code] "Past your values in here"
.

Bit like above....

This will put them in a table thats easier to see.

Also, its not really easy to see whats happening or to determine much from your logs as it needs to be all the way through the rev range.

If you fancy a trip to Headcorn sometime, I'd be glad to help.

Longman, Thank i'll certainly take you up on your kind offer, one weekend, it's about a 2 hour drive from here, but i can find my way to Headcorn station ok.

Is this any better, i made a bit of a hash of the logging, theres a bit of road i thought would be ok, but it just isn't long enough to get a good run...

Can you make anything out of this mess at all... by any chance if not no worries, i'll have a drive over to you when it's convenent for you :coolthumb

Thanks mate...

With my experience, i can't really see anything that jumps out as bad.

You do really need a clean run from low to full throttle to get any good data, like Specified Boosts against Actual Boost - Only really measurable with no let off so it can build up and sustain its max.

Same with torque (block 120)

I didn't really appreciate that you were that far out though mate. Thought Sussex was closer than that. Still, if you are happy to come over, perhaps next Saturday? I will happily give you a hand! Might even make a brew!!

I am seconds from the station.... PM me with a phone number in the week and we can arrange something!

Guys, two questions...

1) how reliable is vag-com's measure of torque? i.e. better/worse than a dyno run?

2)When I'm doing my run should I keep my speed as low as possible in 1st and 2nd and then floor it through 3rd and 4th? Or should I floor it through all the gears? Or no flooring at all? Gently adding right foot until its on the floor?

VAG-COM's measure of torque is ok as long as you are not remapped. There is a stock figure for torque that is saved on the ECU. This is what VAG-COM refers to then working out actual torque via load etc.

This value isn't updated after a remap so it will always be refering to the original value and not the remapped one. (If that makes sense!)

In terms of accuracy...... Its a guide more than a perfect figure so maybe a dyno is better???

I think for a run, you need to get up to 4th, ideally. Get into 4th at fairly low revs to give you a good lot of data all through the range, then floor it as you normally would to get the best acceleration, pressing "Start" on the Laptop at the same time....Then go all the way though to the red line.
