Hey,
I have a 55plate MK 4 Ibiza. Just recently when you start the car the digital heating screen flashes 5-6 times then returns to normal. Also when you turn the wheel the dash lights and headlights dim slightly then return to normal? Anyone help me out?

The climate control flashing means you have a fault or it needs re-gassing. Mine was flashing so took it to dealers and they replaced a pressure switch and re-gassed under warranty.

The lights dimming is normal when turning the wheel while stationery or at low speed as the electro hydraulic steering pulls a lot of current.

Not sure about the digiital heating display

But the dimming of the lights are normal, there was another thread on it a while ago. So nothing to worry about:)

As said the lights dimming is normal, the Climate control sounds like it needs a re-gas (Kwikfit do this quite cheep). The fact that you don't use it could well be why the gas has gone off, the gas needs to be pumped round the system and exercised once a week.

The thing is that even up here (up North), the A/C is handy to speed up the demisting in wet weather - and West Scotland tends to suffer a bit of rain now and again!! If a pipe is broken and a lot of moisture gets into the system, then fixing it after a few years will be expensive - something to consider if you plan to trade it in some time in the future, ie its value will be lower than it could be!

Just remember the main location for leaks due to under use will be the compressor - and in these cars the compressor runs on bypass or low duty when not being used to chill the car - you can not deselect the compressor - so not using it should not cause any problems unless some of the coupling seals are a bit stuffed due to other reasons.

On a simular note, has anyone else noticed that if you have the AC on and then put car in Reverse the AC seems to get a boost?

The system automatically goes into recirculation mode when reverse gear is engaged to try and stop exhaust fumes entering the cabin - it does it on the standard A/C models too

Hi mate, mine did this flashing display thing but only ONCE, system works ok but must confess that the fan speed seems to do its own thing in ECO or any other mode. GOT my car serviced at a VW dealer as a mates wife is on service desk, they say it indicates that the air con is low and needs re charge. Is it worth me puttin into stealers as its under warranty till april ? You suggest if there a fault they will re gas ?

Mine didn't flash every time, just every now and then. I ran Vag-Com on it and it came back with a 'A/C Pressure Switch (F129)' fault so I knew there wa a problem. They probably had to empty the system to replace the switch so would have had to re-gas it. It's worth taking it in, but try and run Vag-Com on it if you can.

Have a mate in the right place, mine flashed but only once ( 5-6 times) so took it to him. He ran a diagnostic . If it only flashes once/or twice it is the compressor sensing a 1 % drop in pressure and it is telling you to have it re gas'd. It it flashes regular it is a system fault probably a pressure switch !
