leon tsi 1.8 DSG problem

First of all, it's amazing to have a place to find information on the web about this car.

Just bought a 1.8 leon automatic and have 2 major issues (within weeks).

1. I was driving the car up hills a few times, and the car just stopped responding. The engine was running but the car stopped moving! I had to put my foot on the gas for a few seconds before the car started moving again!

2. Again going uphill, the car barely crawled. With foot on the gas, I barely was able to get over 70kmp/h.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

When I took the car in, they couldn't find an issue.

I'd really appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks!

Barry

Both of these were about crawling up hills?

IIRC the DSG has a system that will disengage the clutch after extended crawling on hills (without acceleration) to prevent the clutch from burning out.

I'm sure someone with a DSG can confirm

Sounds odd, not experienced anything like that in mine, though it did once at some traffic lights slip it into Neutral accidentally. I wasn't on a hill. But live in a fairly hilly area so I am up and down them most days.

I had my hand resting on the gearstick and must of slid it into N without realising, its quite a light touch required really. It will slide straight into N from D/S without pressing in the unlock button on the stick.

I thought I was still in D with my foot on the brake, when i let off at the light it just revved :D

As your describing this it does sounds like a fault though, assume the gearbox is throwing up no warning lights?

Things to note are what mode your in Normal, Sport or ECO, keep an eye on what the gear-box is displaying in the Multi Function Display when you get no drive. Is it displaying a GEAR Number, or has it switched to display N?

Sorry can't help you much more, but if its happening regular there must be something wrong, keep throwing it back at the dealer.

If its holding back, may not be the gearbox could be an engine fault, and its limping. But all of those scenarios should throw up a light on the dash or in the car warning display.

Thanks Mark for your response.

In both cases I was in Eco. I didn't see a light come on on the dashboard.

If I did accidentally put it into neutral, would a 4-5 secs foot down on the gas get the car started again?

Eco can be a bit daft I've found, throttle response is reduced for a start, and the gearing is altered for more economic driving, which means they tend to be long gears. Not great for pulling up hills for long durations.

In Eco the other thing the car does is coasting, so if you come off the power it disengages the gears. You'll notice for example it may say E4 for 4th gear if you get right off the gas, it'll change to E with no number. If you put your MFD display to consumption it'll actually say COASTING. You should also see an ECO logo appear in side a circular arrow!

If you brake or get back on the gas it will select a new gear. Its ok ECO mode but it faffs with the gearbox a lot, and the added issue of hills, the speed, the inclination involved may just be a bit too much for it. You have to actually alter how you drive i find when using ECO. Don't expect anything to happen in a hurry.

I'd try it in Normal or Sport and see if you get the same problem occuring.

Just had a quick scan of the manual and it says this:

In some situations (on mountain roads or when towing a trailer or caravan) it can be advantageous to switch temporarily to the manual gearbox programme so that the gear ratios can be selected manually to suit the driving conditions.

I guess it depends what sort of hills your climbing, how steep, how fast etc. But I would try the other gearbox modes and/or switch over to manual gears.

With my DSG i will always use manual if its a particular steep hill and im crawling. It tries to use a high gear which can cause some fun.

Sorry to hijack this but didnt want to start a new thread. I started noticing something on my DSG (it has 150mi on it so far). Sometimes in the 3rd gear when I let it rev to 3 - 4k (only happens in higher revs) I can hear a subtle intermittent hissing sound, like using a broom to rub a piece of cloth, not a grinding noise. Not in any other gear. its not very loud I have to have radion off etc.

Anyone knows if this is maybe part of the running in process please? Should I be worried?

Thanks

Its normal, my car has already 6k kms (like 3.5k-4k miles) and it does the exact same sound.

I think is normal.
