If the previous owner decided to turn it up to 11 on a regular basis it's possible that you do have a poor example. Although you also must have better ears than I have, because I would consider the doors to be plenty solid enough to not warrant sound deadening. SEAT/VW doors are solid compared to other manufacturers! (Even if they do leak...)

I am the cars only owner. No car door is solid enough not to warrant sound deadening of some sort. Seat are no exception. You will be amazed at the difference it makes to even the OEM speakers.

I think my ears have suffered far too much abuse over the years to tell ANY difference between sound deadening or none!

speedinsaxo, when you say sound deadening... is that wedging a whole bunch of something to absorb stray sound waves behind the speaker? I guess this stops vibrations and sound waves being reflected and interfering with the ones you want right?

I am quite critical about sound quality, I used a 2 channel amp to power a sub and two 6x9s in my old car using a home build passive crossover, should have seen the size of the inductors and capacitors! This gave me a lovely balanced output with all the frequencies going to their ideal locations. The only problem was there was too much bias towards the back of the car, but I got used to that.

I am planning on keeping this car a good few years, so spending time and money on it isn't a problem. I may see how the standard speakers do for volume, and if I change them, then I may as well put in sound deadening while the trims off right?

mine is spot on with Kenwood headunit put in by previous owner (nothing too fancy) standard speakers as far as i am aware, brilliant quality.

mines a 2000 model 1.6S by the way

Is there meant to be less bass from the drivers side than from the passenger side, or would one of the speakers be damaged

I would guess a speaker is damaged, or a plug disconnected, or the balance setup wrong.

What sort of height is the biting point on your clutches guys? Mine seemed about 80% of the way towards the top.

I would have to say the standard speakers are ok not great though, need a new h/u for mine badly the fact it has a tape player speaks volumes

I would think about changing the HU, but I like the option if needed to use the sav-nav in it

As for clutch, think its about the middle I don't think about it, I just let my leg get on with it
