Hi guys,
i just thought id share with you my guide on how to get the most out of your exhaust system for practically nothing or maybe even end up with cash in your hand.
This is how i modified my exhaust system on my 2002 leon Cupra 1.8T AUQ, with exhaust systems being so expensive, if you have the time but not the pennies definately worth doing.
As the results were fantastic and still looks OE.
Firstly this is not a 5 minute job, give yourself plenty of hours and you will need
welder, air saw, grinder, O2 spacer, 1.9tdi centre exhaust section, joining sleeve, exhaust clamps and cement, chisels, screwdrivers ect
1)Remove downpipe and CAT from the car and also remove what you need from the centre exhaust with air saw, by offering up the new pipe
2)Remove the lambda sensors and decat the exhaust, this was only possible for me by cutting two flaps in the two parts of the CAT and prising the metalicky shitty stuff out.
WARNING:this takes time and patience, the stuff in the cat is not like some ceramic ones it doesnt break up easy so take your time, and REMEMBER PUT THE CAT GUBBINS IN A BAG AND SAVE FOR LATER !
ALL OF THIS STUFF MUST BE REMOVED
then re weld the cat sections up that you have cut as access holes the catalytic converter stuff
3)Offer up and fit the centre exhaust pipe off 1.9tdi golfs/bora/a3/leon you may need to sleeve it to the back box, fitting exhausts can be a bit like a chinese puzzle but use your inginuity and you will get a solution. the exhaust fits on the original rubbers.
4)Fit the O2 spacer which is available on Ebay for about £6 to the SECONDARY lambda hole and fit the sensors back in (you may have to file off the heatshielding for the secondary sensor to fit it into the spacer depending on your sensor type)
5)Offer it all up reattach to the turbo, if any of the joints are poor you may have to seal with paste, but if you take your time putting the exhaust together you shouldnty have a problem
6)Start it up and listen to it purrrr ! sounds great without being overly loud and the performance improvement is unreal, coupled with better fuel economy (i can now get 43.00mgp on a run)
It is only the backbox that remains standard and is the only restrictor.
I have had this system on my car for nearly 1000 miles and no fault codes for catalyst efficiency so the spacer seems to have done its job
just make sure you have a friendly mot testing station near you to get the car tested otherwise emmisions with fail obviously
Cost O2 spacer £6, centre exhaust £9.80, clamps/sleeve £6 total about £25
and for the CAT in a bag ! go to your local scrapyard or if you deal with cat traders or travellers this stuff is worth anywhere between £10-£50
hope this helps guys, any stumbling blocks post them and i will try and reply !
Regards
Andrew
