Hi everyone

My gearbox has been whining for quite a while now, it used to be in 3rd gear only but now it’s pretty much any of the gear’s except 6th.
Only does it when I let off the gas, never does it on power.

would a box from a Cupra R Fit or any other petrol 6 speed car like the golf or does it have to be an AUQ engine car?
Thank you in advance

Have you fitted the shim mod? that fixes it in most cases and you don't even have to remove the box from the car. Note there are 2 different sizes, you need to measure the one on your box to see which one it is.

my car had the whining gearbox a couple years back when my mate had it, was fine going up the gears but as soon as you let off throttle it would whine very loud, I pointed him in the direction of the shim, he ordered it and fitted himself in about 30 mins with no mechanical knowledge, cured the whine and its still perfect now with me.

Perfect I’ll give it a go, it’s going in for mot and service this week so I’ll get the bits measured up and ordered. Hopefully it fixes the problem. Thank you sir

Yeah worth a shot mate. It takes up the 1mm or so of freeplay in the box. Quite a few people have had success when fitting it.

Thanks for your reply, I’ve not heard of that, what does it do exactly?
VW basically forgot to add a rubber band in the factory 🙂 It's not a mod as such, more sorting out a quality control issue that they should have been recalled for. They washed their hands of it because it only really becomes an issue after any warranty has expired and it was never a safety issue.
The kit comprises of official VW/Seat parts.

My 3rd gear audibly drags on deceleration, is this kind of what you had?
I will have to look this fix up myself if so.

3rd gear decel is the classic start of this issue, then it moves to the rest of the box, Sounds like you need that shim too.
Thanks mate. I've just watched redline revs fit it & thanks to your advice, it sounds like a win win! I assumed it was the gearbox on its way, but this does sound like a super cheap fix & I am keen to sort that out.
Your above link (to buy), would this also fit the 1.8t AUQ 6 Speed?
Cheers Mty, you literally saved us £££'s again 👍
Edit: Apologies, I see I need to measure the cap. Thanks again
