Leon Auxilliary Belt issue

Hi there - hope you can help me....

On Wed I got my 2001 1.6s SEAT Leon cambelt, tensioner kit, aux belt & water pump changed on my car from a local garage with a good reputation.

Yesterday I drove about 50miles and all seemed fine but when I went to park the car I lost all power and when I looked under the bonnet there appears to be a loose belt (I don't think it's the cambelt).

Anywhooo, I took a pic with my phone camera to show you.

What belt is this and should the AA be able to put it back on?

Would you be suspicious that this has come off the day after I got my cambelt changed - call me Mr. Sceptical

Any help much appreciated

Cheers,

RR.

No its not the cambelt. I know nothing about cars, but looks like a fan belt of some kind.... Tbh there is no reason other than its fooked for it to fall off... I cant really tell where the picture is looking at, but looks a bit like it could be in the right location for a cambelt but cambelts are in housing. ie you have to undo something to look at them.

i'm guessing your looking down the left side of the engine block there. that is a FAN belt that has come off which pumps lots of things that your probably dont want to be doing without. it also charges your alternator. at all costs dont drive it. seems a bit suspect that it should come off just after you've had work done in the engine so i think you've got some good comeback to the garage that did your CAM/toothed belt. make sure the belt is replaced for a new one.

p.s. best bet would be to agree what needs to be done over the phone (with the garage) then ask them to collect the car unless AA will move it for free

That's the auxiliary drive belt, you had it right in your thread title. Seat calls it the ribbed belt. Lots of people still refer to them as fan belts, but as you can see they don't drive the radiator fans (as they used to when all cars were rear-wheel drive and the engine was mounted along the car). It will drive the alternator, power steering pump and air cooling compressor (of you have aircon).

Are you sure it hasn't snapped?

It will have been removed by the garage when they changed your cambelt, and if they were doing it properly they should have put a new one on. I'd guess either the tensioner has failed (or wasn't reset properly by your garage) or the belt wasn't refitted properly. Definitely needs to go back to your garage for them to put it right.

The AA will only be able to refit it if there is a simple reason why it has come off. If the tensioner has broken it is likely to be beyond them, and you'll need to be recovered.
