Leon 2000MY - Gearbox problems

Hi

I've a W reg Leon with 120k on the clock and recently it's having gearbox problems. Under acceleration the gearbox is fine but without power being applied or just cruising it sounds like a bag of old spanners. I've taken it to my local indy garage and they've diagnosed a diff problem, they said that the diff bearings have broken up and want £1,200 to supply and fit a recon box.

Is this a common problem, are they right in their diagnosis and is that price reasonable. The car isn't worth much more than that, am I better scrapping it or is another path more appropriate?

The options I see are:

a) Fit recon box (perhaps this might be cheaper if I source the box myself, ebay?)
b) Recon my current gearbox
c) Scrap car

Any advice greatfully received :)

If you get an indy garage to fit it, it might be worth it. Ebay seems a good place to get bits.

I'm in the same situation though, and i'm using it as an excuse to upgrade to something a bit bigger.

That quote was from an indy.

Other than ebay, any good sources for 2nd hand 'boxes?

Upgrading isn't really an option, this is a 2nd car used for commuting so cost is the main factor here.
