I'm not sure if this is a problem, but it is something I've noticed recently.

With the stereo off and on a quiet road I can here, quite clearly, the turbo spinning up and down, but not a whoosh noise, it's more of a whine. It's not a noise I ever associated with my 20VT, but is very prominent on this one.

Seems to start as I accelerate, even very gently and at low speeds and revs.

Is it just the noise of the turbo spooling up and down, or is it something I should get looked at?

Hi

I have had the same problem. Mine is quite loud in fact. I have had my dealer investigate. The service manager said he spoke to seat and have come to the conclusion that while it shouldn't make that noise, the turbos are mass produced and some are noiser than others. My wifes Altea 1.9 tdi makes the same noise but is VERY faint. I only noticed it cos I was really listening carefully for it. Basically there is no fault and they will not be replaced. Just have to put up with it im afraid.

Right.

Not sure I like the sound of
it shouldn't make that noise

Do you think it's worth taking it in for a diag?

Thing is I've had it remapped by CustomCode about 1,000 miles ago - might be being paranoid, but I didn't notice this happening before.

funnily enogh space coyote i only noticed it after mine was revod. I had the revo taken off for other reasons but the whine is still there. My dealer could find no fault though. It is a bit concerning that the remap has done this and still exists when at standard.

A colleague had the turbo replaced on his 2.0TDI Altea because of this noise. I can't remember the exact reason for the noise now, but he's on holiday so can't ask him at the minute.

Rather than redirecting you to a different forum, here is my original post just after getting it done:

Anyway, for the update:

I've just got back from JBS Auto Design - what can I say? Let me see.

First of all JBS_Mike's tea is as good as everyone says AND he even had to go to the shop to get some more milk - thanks again Mike, much appreciated.

Onto the code itself; James wrote the code over the last 4 days, so the Custom Code itself took less than a couple of minutes to upload and check - very efficient. Had a Green performance filter installed - James took it out for a quick test and came back about 5 minutes later (seemed like a lifetime when you're itching to get behind the wheel yourself). Anyway he arrived back and it was my turn.

For those of you who don't know exactly where JBS is, it's right next a dual carriage way - so straight onto the dual carriage way - wow!

Not sure how to describe it in a "sound bite" but if I had to I'd say it felt like my Cupra 20VT but different - more "pully"

Soon doing crazy speeds without even noticing - it pulls so well in every gear - even 6th, it revs so much free-er and perhaps it's my imagination but I'm sure it sounds better too - perhaps that's the performance filter?

After a quick zoom around, went back to JBS for the tough part - actually paying for it - couldn't get the huge grin off my face, even when I was parting with the cash!

Said my goodbyes and headed home (only 8 miles unfortunately) but on the way home I decided that 3rd gear was my favourite - actually gives you a push in the small of your back when putting your foot down, oh and I love hills now.

All in all very very happy - I would definately recommend Custom Code to anyone who is considering it.

I will need to remind myself from time to time why I actually bought a diesel - fuel economy, but maybe not this tank.

This all still stands, even with the potential turbo issue, but I would be willing to bet that it would do the same with or without the remap.

Apologies for digging up an old thread, but before I picked up my 2.0 TDI Sport, the technician noticed the turbo whine & wanted to replace the turbo under warranty. He said there was no detrimental effects on the engine, just annoyance of the constant whine - which I agreed with.

A new turbo is now fitted & it is much quieter.

yes i have heard years ago when i was into Pug dturbos that the noisier ones are usually slightly better performing, not sure of this was true, but my friends had a noisy turbo and mine was quiet. it seems that as mentioned above some are noisy some arent.

Another example, the turbo on my ibiza is quiet as, where as my brother in laws golf is much noisier. personally i like the whistle and miss it on mine :(

I can't tell any difference in performance between the old & new turbo.
The whine was more like a police car siren which became annoying after a while.
Some Octavia II 2.0 TDI owners over on Briskoda have the same whine too.

A mate of mine had this problem on his Golf TDi 140 (police car siren noise) and the turbo blew it's oil seals and wrecked the engine by dumping loads of oil into the block! VW replaced the whole engine, gearbox and exhaust (it was full of oil) under warranty.
