Don't forget for the most part you can deal with Autoglass direct, so a portion of their higher price reflects the admin charge associated with contacting your insurance for the remainder of the balance

...not saying it's right, but that’s probably why it’s dearer

Also, you can spec original manufacturers glass if you go to their outlets ;)

You don't often get anything free in this life and contrary to what 1000s of people believe, a windscreen claim WILL ALWAYS BE reflected in your renewal/premium.

You may well still have NCD intact as lots of companies offer this by stating it won't affect this or your premium but it will, after all think about it, why would they give you this totally free especially if you have quite a small premium and profit margin for them, they simply wouldn't be in business.

So nothing or only a little to pay and no effect on NCD but when you renew they will have it marked as a claim and they will start to claw money back by charging you more. Before anyone says it due to age or you accruing more NCD in that year, it is not impossible for your premium to still go down that year but it will not of gone down by as much as it would have if you hadn't put in windscreen claim.

Who are you with d3?? I have a feeling this is a new Insurance blag - how long ago did you replace your screen may be you could ask them tomorrow and see if they have also changed the goal posts.

Good idea Slimy - I look forward to hearing about it later.

Cheers

I was previously with Greenlight insurance when I claimed for the windscreen, now insured with Adrian Flux

The issue I have (which is admittedly self-inflicted) is that I genuinely didn't consider a windscreen claim to be a claim. It's not like I cracked the windscreen due to dangerous driving for example. It sounds so daft on reflection, but in theory I've been driving around with invalid insurance just because of a past windscreen replacement. I would have been even more peed off if I'd had a windscreen repair and then had a big claim refused. I've never renewed with the same company, so my insurance quotes are based on renewed information that I put in through confused.

Time to bookmark one of those Ebay repair kits methinks...

I think the Insurance Companies Share your information with each other anyways. The fact that you have to tell them about 5yrs of claims instead of 3yrs is also annoying!!

Hi sorry just answer all your points:-

- I would have to pay £70 regardless if I went through the insurance as its my excess - so I look at it as £70 + £70 = sorry you are correct though

- Insurance companies are changing the goal posts so when you get your windscreen repaired (not replaced, repaired) that to them is a claim (not an accident claim but a cliam) - it is still used in their criteria to generate you next premium. Which of course will go up. I think you will find that they say accidents or claims int he past 5yrs - so really truely you should tell them if you get you windscreen replaced. Im sure they have it on record any way and share the information.

- I was suprised to as I thought if you had an accident your claim would be frozen not on just a windscreen replacement. Did you replace your windscreen or repair it. I think this is one of those Insurance amendments (change the goal posts). I am with AXA!!

sorry but your insurance company is having you on. I work for a motor insurance company and no insurer counts a windscreen claim as a claim, you do not need to notify other insurers, it will not effect your NCD and it will have no bearing on your future premiums.

The fact that your premiums have increased in the years following windscreen reapirs is purely coincidental, insurance premiums go up each year based on new rating charges not because of a windscreen repair.

Make the claim pay the £70 excess and dont go straight to the glass company

So how do you explain me getting different prices when i go through confused and the only difference is a windscreen claim? And if no insurer recognise it as a claim, why does confused have it on their drop down menu of claim reasons?

Also:-

- why when I had also negotiated the price for my Insurance and made a Windscreen Repair in the week before the DD was taken that my Insurance went up by £20?? Swift told me that it was because I made a Windcreen Claim

- I also have a document from More Than (yearly Summary) stating Claims taken - Windscreen Claim (clearly listed).

- If you are in the Industry ring AXA and ask them why my NCD will be frozen for a year if I have my windscreen replaced via them. So it does affect my NCD.

Insurance Companies have a number of CRITERIA that their complex algorhythms (spelt wrong Im sure) including the obvious and Windscreen Repairs and Replacements are part of that criteria and have an affect on your Premium FACT.

Feel free to tell us who you work for and I will be sure to ask for a quote in April.

You are going to have to provide facts - feel free to go ask the call centre managers and come back to us - I am very interested to hear what you find. Im sure we all are.

Criteria to generate your Premium Quote - I always think I have already typed what is in my head but when I read it back I miss end of sentences. Passionate about the subject and lack of typing skills!!

This thread is getting silly - if I click Quote again on Confused.com from one week to the next I get different prices from the same insurers, using exactly the same details

I also suspect this bit's illegal;
- why when I had also negotiated the price for my Insurance and made a Windscreen Repair in the week before the DD was taken that my Insurance went up by £20?? Swift told me that it was because I made a Windcreen Claim

You agreed a price and they accepted the risk. The only time your premium should have gone up (if at all) is at next year's newal....

I agree - it was a major struggle to get them to stick to their agreed quote - they were the cheapest the next being £500-£600 mark and I was so annoyed with them that I was prepared to pay more and switch Insurance Companies for the sake of £20.

I really just wanted to know if anyone had replaced their Windscreen for cheaper than £140.

I know it may be silly but it is a fact - try it yourself on Confused with the same Criteria but in the same week!! Then you can take out the fact that Insurance Company prices vary from week to week.

You may well through no fault of your own be misinformed by your company or simply not aware of the correct facts but if you do work in the industry then do some further digging as you will find that what you have written is factually incorrect.

It is a claim, details are passed and IT WILL ULTIMATELY affect future premiums but of course initially it doesn't cost person anything other than any excess and it doesn't affect NCD which is why most assume it's TOTALLY FREE which it isn't. Stop and think about it logically, with some policies especially cheaper ones the cost of these repairs [even at reduced prices insurance companies pay] would often wipe out [and more] any profit made, why would they give you this free, what do they stand to gain from doing so?

A brief update, I got an initial response from Which;

Thanks for your email about Autoglass's claims that repairing your windscreen is free and will not affect your no claims discount. I am sorry it has taken longer than expected to reply.

Which? have not looked at this issue, or investigated how having Autoglass repair your windscreen affects your insurance. Our researchers are always keen to hear how members get on when dealing with companies and organisations. I have passed a copy of your email to them so they are aware of the problems you have had with Autoglass.

I have also passed a suggestion to our Research Team that we consider investigating this issue for a future report in Which?

So fingers crossed it gets picked up at some point.

I'd always thought that car insurance included a 'motor insurance' policy and a 'windscreen insurance' policy - suggestion seems to be in this thread that insurers track windscreen claims to bump the premium at the point of renewal.. presumably though if you do shop around and move to a new insurer in the year following a windscreen claim, you might not be unfairly penalised? It seems peculiar when windscreen damages are either A: completely at random or B: dependent on the number of miles covered. So I might expect a higher premium for specifying a 40,000 annual mileage vs. 10,000, but not if I've had an unexpected stone chip/crack in the past...
