LCR droning noise

I've done a search but couldn't find a definitive answer...

I have a droning noise coming from the front of my 2005 '55 plate LCR, sort of like tyre roar but exaggerated and louder, it's done nearly 20,000 miles. When I bought the car it had nearly new Dunlop Sport Max on the front and the original Pirelli's on the back, I have since changed the Pirrelli's for matching Sport Max so am running the same tyres all round, all running standard 33psi.

Just been in to the dealers for it's 20k service, mentioned it when I dropped off but nothing was mentioned when I collected (just a lady on reception). They changed the front drop links under warranty to cure some slight knocking but the droning is still there. Have to say the dealer didn't fill me with confidence, forgot to stamp the service book and also didn't mention the brake fluid change which is due next month. So got to go back again next month to get that done (would have had it done at the same time had I known)

I am trying not to let it become a thing in my mind but I've had enough cars in the past to know that it's not quite right.....

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers :)

Does the noise come and go ? any virbration through the wheel ?

If it's a wheel bearing it gets worse when cornering but I'll bet it doesn;t get any worse when cornering.....am I right?

I had the same sound which later transpired as a rear damper

The damper was so bad it pushed the tyres out of shape so get this checked ASAP or like me you'll be paying for new tyres again too.......this was my tyre

Thanks Guys...

I had hoped they would look at during the service seeing as I'd asked! :(

The noise seems to be there all the time but no vibration through the wheel, doesn't seem to get worse through cornering either, seems to drive OK.....

Ruddmeister, that tyre look a right mess!

It need to go back for the brake fluid change so I'll insist they check again, might actually try another dealer this time....

Mine had a little vibration at time and would then dissappear also the droning would get worse according to various road surfaces and speeds.

Ask that they check all the dampers

A set of these sorted the car out ;)

Thanks for the info Ruddmeister :)

I guess I'll get them to check the dampers and the wheel bearings and take it from there....

I was told at my last service that I had a 'stepped' rear nearside tyre (same corner that I had leaky damper replaced last year!).

I had no vibration or droning noise tho.

I needed my front tyres replacing so I had the new ones put on the back, and the older back tyres put on the front (so the 'stepped' rear nearside became the front nearside).

Drove it out the garage and thought the fracking wheel was going to come off. The vibration and droning was terrible.

Since replaced fronts (only had 1mm left anyway) with new tyres and all OK again.

If anyone get's a leaking damper changed under warranty I'd get the tyre looked at as well. If it's 'stepped' (run the flat of your hand over it's surface - it's not always as visably noticeable as Rudd's!) you might have a chance of having it replaced for free too. Then again....

I meant to post up that when I was under the back of the car taking the ARB off for sale, I noticed the rear nearside tyre had gone like Ruddmeister's.

90,000 miles though. I'd heard a droning that I thought was coming from the front, but over time realised it was coming from the back.

I do think LCRs are hard on wheel bearings - not a lot of "give" in the suspension. I think I had three wheel bearings done in 90,000.
