Has anybody used a KN filter in their standard 1.9tdi - I am thinking of buying one as over 3 years they are cheaper than buying paper replacements

Do any of these make any noticable difference in performance or economy?
Or is it mainly to avoid replacing all the time?
Seems a bit cheap to make any real performance difference.
Would it be classed as a modification by the insurance company, or just as using a different manufacturer for a spare part?

Do any of these make any noticable difference in performance or economy? - varies from none to helps the turbo spool up a bit quicker.

Or is it mainly to avoid replacing all the time? yes this is a big advantage

Would it be classed as a modification by the insurance company, or just as using a different manufacturer for a spare part? a replacement panel filter should not be classed as a mod.

My insurance company for previous cars did think it was a modification.

Performance gains are minimal to a standard car - althought air does flow more efficiently without the drop in flow a normal paper element has it gets dirtier and dirtier.

Main advantage for me is the cost - cheaper to run over 3 years than conventional filters
