I have a 1.6 TDI CR Leon and on my drive to work I can average almost 60mpg, and that's not 100% sensible driving either plus it's through the city where I don't get over 40mph and the engine has barely got to 90c by the time I finish. On the flat at 60mph in 5th (eg motorway or A road dual carriageway) the instant consumption normally sits around 3 figures.

Another VW 1.6 TDI engine delivering good economy. The urban and combined figures for the 1.6 TDI Leon are slightly higher than the Ibiza and the extra urban is slightly lower. However they are close enough for Ibiza owners to expect similar consumption to tehguy's Leon.

SecretWeapon, if you're going to be happy with an average of 50 mpg (only 3 mpg better than your petrol Clio) then you probably don't need to worry. But with an urban cycle of 52.3 mpg and a combined cycle of 65.7 mpg I think your expectations are low.

If the one you've found is not as good as Theowls88's or Biker's or even tehguy's Leon then shouldn't you be looking for one that is that good? Take the opportunity to make sure what yours is capable of delivering.

I'll be sure to report all of my findings anyway! In the meantime if any 1.6 owners who do get decent fuel consumption would like to reassure me I've made a good choice - please feel free!

Make sure the garage has installed the latest ECU update for the 1.6 CR TDI engine. It makes a big difference on the older ones.

Excellent :) The 1.6 Leon we picked up on Friday is headed that way in 2 weeks.

So far, once warmed up (which took about 10 miles) it ran good mpg (60-80mpg) but while it was warming up it was in the thirties.

I wonder if the 70mpg figure is do-able in the fr's 2.0 tdi??

Not even close so far.

Well into the 60's at motorway speeds on the loaner we took to spain. However, I think that you'd struggle in the UK

Haven't been able to get my FR to 70mpg driving anything like normally.

I can get to low-mid 60's if I try to drive economically on the motorway by staying at 70mph or just below.

Everyday driving is around the 50mpg mark give or take a couple of mpg

Look in the mk2 Leon section a guy in there with a 1.6TDI got the best part of 1000 miles from a single tank of diesel. That's pretty good economy

Well, so far since picking up the car (and doing about 170 miles), I've averaged 53mpg. My peak on the journey to work has been 60.7mpg and the lowest on the same journey has been 50.5mpg.

My dad took it for a 4 mile spin and managed to get 67mpg - no part of the route went over 50mph though.

Considering that I'm still learning how to drive it to get the best economy, and knowing that I have a software update yet to be applied which a lot of people say improves things - I'm fairly happy.

My dread was getting figures in the 40s which have been banded around the net - and I can't see that happening with this car...

Anyway, love the car. Here's some pictures of it with the 17" alloys:

Looks good, the 17" alloys certainly lift the looks, I'm keeping an eye out on eBay to see if a set comes up

Excellent figures - looks like you got a good one. No worries about the dreaded 40's for you.

They do definitely look so much better with the 17" alloys. I think you'll be very happy markmeus! Here's another photo for good measure :D

You were 100% right, got my 17s on today, what a difference! Much more grippy and less road noise, which suprised me, and the ride quality hasn't suffered despite the bigger wheels.

Here's a quick pic, they're pretty similar to the 17" Ibiza wheels, like to keep it nice and OEM!

It almost looks lowered there, but it's just cos the old wheels are in the back! :)
