i cant see why it would, because a lot of people de wiper the car so they remove the whole system, plus some cars dont even come with them so it shouldnt fail, but i wouldnt know for certain

I thought it was like the spare wheel/tyre - if it is fitted at the time of testing - it must be legal and working.

If you de-wiper - it is not fitted and so doesn't need to be working.

I agree with the above.....If its there....it has to be tested

rear washer and wiper are not required to work to pass mot, fronts have to be as flapper says, it can fail for not having water in the washers, thats if u get a tit of a tester most will top it up or tell you too

Strange then that a damaged rear wiper blade WILL fail an MOT.

Interesting you say this, as the rear wiper is definately not part of an MOT test, however i do know many places are missinformed on this one.
Rear wipers are not fitted to all cars, but many places do think if its fitted then it must work and have good blade etc. But they are wrong as the MOT regulations only refer to wipers relating to the drivers view FORWARDS.
It looks like its a common missconception this one.

If you then say you have failed for this, id ask did it really fail, and if so what for as many garages report items as needing to be done but are not an MOT failure.. if you know what i mean.

The only way i can see a damaged rear blade being a proper MOT failure was if it is clasified as a loose insecure/dangerous item and is a failure on that basis.

If it was due to it failing to effectively clear the screen nearly every leon wouild fail! But anyway this is not part of an MOT.

Ive watch many MOTs, ive never ever seen them check operation of the rear wiper, but then i use places that test only and dont repair. I suspect places that do repair will check them as wiper blades are a 'nice earner'.

If you go to the direct gove website it states that MOTs check wipers and washers to give the 'driver a clear view ahead'.

Given that you can drive vans which have no rear window a streaky rear wiper is of no consequence, although this may mean you need a passenger side mirror as im sure you need a drivers mirror and a rear OR passenger side mirror.

i thought that everything that came as standard had to be working...or something along those lines?!?! cos my dads car failed his MOT 2 years ago (volvo s80 d5 full spec) because a motor had gone in the headlight wiper!!

when i went for an mot test recently with another car it failed on many things and 1 was the windscreen washers not working... the motor had gone. also the tit failed it on wipers. so if u get someone strict then they will fail it on these little things.

If you de-wiper - it is not fitted and so doesn't need to be working.

Also a myth and common misconception, the spare wheel isnt part of the test, it can be bald, cords hanging out and still cant fail the MOT. The only reason the tester can lift the boot carpet is to check structure thats all.

Winscreen washers, blades etc must work if a screen is fitted (no glass, no need for wipers and washers) but the rear washers and wiper etc not in the test.

right ok, so lets say:
the radio doesnt work,
the rear interior light doesnt work,
the alarm doesnt work,
the little light in the ashtray doesnt work,
the cigarette lighter doesnt work,
the ipod connections stopped working..

you can see where im going on this one.
All pottentially standard items but i think we would all agree no reason to fail an MOT test.

However, interestingly for your dads volvo i wonder if it had hid headlights, as its a requirement to have headlight wipers if you have hid headlights. (not many people know this).
But even then im not 100% sure that would be an MOT failure as im not sure its specifically refered to in the MOT test.

ABS would be an item where if its fitted it has to work, (they must see the ABS light come on then go off). But this is specifically stated in the MOT check.
There is nothing for a rear wiper, its simply never mentioned and is not part of an MOT.

People really must be aware that on MOT is often seen as an opportunity for work by garages, - many will say something has failed or is out of specification to give the impression it MUST be done to pass the MOT. Make sure you ask specifically if its an MOT failure if its not something you feel has to be done. Even then if you are not sure seak advice as many dont know the rules very well.

FRONT WIPER ARE A FAIL - the reason being you need to see where you are going.

This thread is about the rears. these are not part of the MOT.

That is a completely differant issue, I'd reckon that your dad's Volvo would have had HID lights fitted and they will need wiper/washers to work.

Edit, ah, andycupra I don't seem to have fully read your posting!!

LOL fair play..didnt think about that one!
sounds like the garage was trying to get work as you have to remove the front bumper to get to it! - - 3 hours labour just in that ffs! shame that as my dad has been going to them for 20+years
its a 52 reg so dont think it has HIDs, could it be bcos volvo keep the lights on all the time?

HIDs cannot be legally fitted as I know of no HID approved headlamps and projectors aint HID approved.
Plus they need to be self levelling, with headlight washers.
