Thinking about getting a cupra, but not sure what options to have. Know i want the ipod conection and the bluetooth pack. But trying to work out if the Sat nav is worth the £1,500 price. Think the dash looks better with it, but not 100%...

What do people think?

some people obviously dont mind wasting cash, get a tomtom instead and save a bundle. Its also got possibly the best software of its type and your not stuck with it in one car. Oh and just cause its fitted in your dash doesn't mean someone wont steal it. As long as you take your tomtom with you, they cant. Tom tom comes with bluetooth for hands free as well so you dont need to speck that either oh and its got mp3 so you can play that through the mp3 socket. all in all a cheaper better option in my opinion.

I have two (spare just in case, with my job its essential) and use them every day all over east and west europe. Just been to estonia and it worked a treat (and thats pretty obscure). We have guys in the company who go to South africa and its good there as well.

So like I say, save a bundle and spend it on furry dice, spoilers and seat covers or something.

I take it you have actually seen the new VW sat-nav systems?

there nothing like the old unit.. oh with a tomtom you dont get a hard disk drive, dvd player, on dash navi instructions/audio information, tmc updates, massive perfect colour screen, able to play music from sd card, car integrated bluetooth features, mp3 and wma playback, etc, etc

Have you seen the tomtoms, both of mine tomtom go 700 and tomtom go 910 both have hard drive, the better one is the 910. oh and both of mine have remote controls and i can use them in ANY car. I can take it on holiday etc. i can use it when walking, cycling or as a passenger in a friends motor....

dvd player, well i can buy one that goes in the car with two huge screens or a drop down screen, plus a tomtom for less than the built in sat nav....and it works while your driving, the built in WONT so whats the point, who watches films when they are parked? virtually pointless.

Music from sd card? download music straight to hard drive with mine or yes you can play music from sd card with 710 and 510 models

intergrated bluetooth, yep

mp3 - yep

etc etc o and most important the sat nav actually works and acuratly unlike most built in stuff, i dont need a disc to update as i can do it on the run, i can download speed cameras for the whole of europe on the run, i can get traffic updates and automatic rerouting to avoid delays on the run,

but like i say, best of all is the actual sat nav software which is second to none.

but then its all down to personal choice.....or having to much money to waste.

From what i understand the real reason most get the in dash effort is cause it looks good........so do big boobs but i aint buying them......lol

From a safety point of view the best reason for having an MFD x is the on dash navigational instructions and integration with the audio system of the car... As opposed to a great big rubber sucker with trailing wires stuck in the middle of your windscreen obscuring your view when approaching junctions...

As for the DVD screens in the back - Have you seen what they do to children in an accident if they aren't secured properly? Even when they are secured according to manufacturers instructions they can come loose and cause severe head injuries to rear occupants...

I like my children being able to feed themselves so won't be getting any screens in my car!

BTW I bought a 2nd hand MFD2 from Fleabay for £380 as I already had a number of nav discs from my Golf... I couldn't justify £1500 either...

TomTom does have nice software but they don't get the best reviews... http://stuff.tv/reviews/sat-nav/default.aspx

EDIT: Won't the W12 come with a MFD3 ;)

Save a bundle? Wasting Cash?
Clearly you don't resell your car at the end of ownership.

I wouldn't have thought sat nav would add much to the value of the car at resale time. Maybe a couple of £100 but nowhere near the £1500 spent on it.

Afterall somebody buying say a 3 year old car would more than likely have to pay to get the maps updated and would be of the opinion "well I can buy a Tom Tom that does the job for less than £200 anyway"

Incidentially the maps aren't particually upto date anyway. No delivery driver can ever find my house or the road leading into it (which has been there at least 3 years).

I had a Garmin (that got stolen) and had the very latest map update put on it. Major roads like the A1 had been updated but other major roads were still out of date, even though they had been open 12 months plus.

really... no full postcode searching?? thats disappointing.. even the 100 odd quid tom tom one europe has that.. makes life alot easier having the full postcode search.... the mfd3 does look the nuts though..

The MFD2 has partial postcode searches - to the 1st digit of the second part. Then it displays all the streets with that postcode... Makes it a lot quicker than typing in the town then the street.
