Insurance Woes

Hi there, I ain't a Cupra owner yet, me and my Mrs share a Mk2 Ibiza 1.4SXi. Me and the boss have finally agreed that I can get a Mk3 Cupra, and bless her heart, she'll insure me in her name as well.

In her name with me as a named driver (I'm 18 BTW), the premium comes to £1605.46 from Elephant. :(

I can't really find many mainstream companies that will insure me at all, let alone near the 1-and-a-half-grand mark.

Do you guys know any companies its worth going to, to get quotes from? Adrian Flux aint interested till I'm 19, other companies want over 3k blah-de-blah. :-o

I'm quite willing to pay just over 1600 quid for a Cupra, but I would like to know from you more experienced SEAT drivers if theres any company that can possibly better this. :)

Also, I want go get it Revo'd within about 6 months of having it. Revo claim this is undetectable, but how safe is it to not declare this? My mate had his Cupra Revo'd and never got busted, but I have seen the other forums where people think I should declare this.

What are your thoughts people?

Can't help with any insurance companies I'm afraid (and I've no sympathy, at that age I had an Astra Merit  )

A quick search for "revo insurance" brings up over 200 threads, though, so plenty of reading there

thats silly money for insurance, wouldn't bother! I don't blame them for charging the earth, you have been driving less than 2 years and they know this even if you are not the policy holder. Can't you get a good few years driving experience behind you and then think about upgrading? One of the reasons i support the bill for people under 20 to be restricted to 1.4

If you can afford to get your car revo'd, you can afford to declare it, you cant exactly switch it off if your laying with a broken neck can you! they CAN find it if they looked hard enough, and with people like you broadcating it on forums that your mate didn't, then they're bound to have reason to check.

sorry if i sounded abrupt, but i see people being ripped off so often, for them to write it off and harm themselves cos of not knowing how to control a faster car. :)

LOL... Well i had a 1.4 and wrote that off, but was more down to the rear tyre blow out mixed with a damp / muddy road. I'm paying £1880 on to 1.6 Sport and was paying £1673 on a 1.4 S.cool. That of course is Fully Comp.

Jesus, 18 and you're looking for a cupra... get a few more years decent driving experience under your belt and do some saving, even in a years time or so you premiums will go down but i would at least wait till i was a bit older before considering such things, at least the 20 mark ... and you talk of revo too ...

You are very lucky to find an insurer that'll touch you being 18 ... and at that price. Check out the stipulations on the insurance though such as your excess and anything else... good luck.

i know of 20/21 year olds paying more than uv been quoted, and getting insured through someone elses name just isnt worth the hassle

get ur own policy, get a NCB and get alot of experience in

Yeah the excess is 350 smackers, thats not too bad for my age. Declaring the Revo upgrade bumps up my premium by 200 quid, and I have a mortgage, so it'd take me a good few months to save and justify to my mrs why I needed to spend 500 quid on a nearly new car, and then I would have to declare this costing me abit more. But then again, the Revo would be way in the future. I want to get used to the extra power first. I just wanted to know what you guys thought about it. But it is my dream over the next few years to buy an Ibiza Cupra and mod it slowly, theres a guy selling his on eBay and his modded it upto 312bhp - mental! On day, ay.

I had another question, do dump valves have to be declared to the insurance company? As they don't increase the power of the car do they?

Cheers for the advice!

Your choice, i would choose the sensible option ... i went from a 1.4 Ibiza to a 2.0 8v one .. and i remember nearly writing the thing off on the first day because i just wasnt use to it , had that a good 2 years before going to a 2.0 16v which i had some had a good 18 months of use before rear ending someone and writing it off. Back to a 1.8 16v mk2 Golf now which is suitable ... its not all about power ... you dont need to let em know re: valve due to it not increasing power.

20 today (4th) and i insured my nu Cupra R, pick it up when the documents come through in the post, hopefully tues. Right, if ur going in the missus name then use diamond i'd say, they support blokes as a second driver, just not as the policy holder... tried confused.com or the AA? I've spent about 25 hours in the last week or so looking for a good deal, i resubmitted a quote today and purely coz i've gone from 19 to 20 today it dropped over 2.5k in price.. I recon u should hold on a few years, save your money and then when the insurance comes down buy something better, yeah, at 18 u want it now now NOW but 2 years on i'm glad i waited, i still got mates my age in 50 odd bhp 1.2/1.4s, now whos laughing!!!

To be honest i'd be suprised if you'd get it cheaper.

I'm 20, 2 years no claims i had a quote for £800 untill i told them i had 3 points and it jumped to £1300.... :-o

I shopped about but elephant was cheapest i could find....

2.5k in price? how much were you paying last year then?

i wouldn't pay anthing over 600 for insurance. thats my max

just done a quick calculation, if your insurance was 2500, you would be paying 47 quid a week on car insurance! thats a bit silly.

I pay £150 a month (just under)....so actually its slightly more than £1300 :(

I think that qoute is totally unfair why does everyone assume that if you're 18 that the only way you can drive is with the right pedal welded to the floor.

Granted alot of 18 year olds dirve like tw@ts but then most drivew nova's etc..

I am 19 and have owned my cupra for just over a year now. I am not dead!
My car still has all the original body panels! and I've never had to claim on my insurance!!

So, before you make implications that every who is 18 wil die the first tine the drive a powerful car think about it!
