Hi guys,

I'm 25 in 2 weeks time & thought it was time I got my own insurance (mines up in 4 weeks).

Never been able to afford it before, so for the last 5 years, I've been a named driver on my mum's policy.

Last year, it was £700 as me as named driver.....

Postcode is a high risk area (Liverpool) - but I still cant get a quote below £1200, been driving 5 years, no accidents, clean license etc.

Tried confused.com & moneysupermarket with no joy.........

Do these sites work out your age from the time you enter the quote details, or from the time the policy will start (i..e, will they see me as 24 or 25 ?).

Any help, sites, insurance comps or anything greatfully recieved (few pints in it ;) )

Chris

I keep promoting this company every time an insurance thread comes up, but its for good reason... Try Greenlight. They are always VERY good for me and they also give a discount if you mention the fact you got their details from SeatCupra.net - Look in the Insurance forum for their details.

Also try SkyInsurance (Google it) as they were the next best for me. Following them were Direct Line but I'm not sure how good DL are with mods' as you have to be 25 before they will cover a modified car.

Both Greenlight and SkyInsurance are very good on mods' and very good people to deal with.

(edit) For what it's worth, Confused.com and Moneysupermarket were useless for me. The cheapest quote I got from them was over £1400. I pay £750 with Greenlight :)

That always helps things. Well, my suggestions would be Greenlight, SkyInsurance and Direct Line... in that order. Greenlight and SkyInsurance are worth dealing with over the phone but DL have an online quoting system.

Try phoning Sky, I got better results that way and was able to explain my situation (56 day ban for SP60) which helped.

Elephant might be worth a shot too.

At the mother in laws: 1,032.15 (only 5 mins down the road - I get stung as the 1st 4 letters of my postcode relate to the thieving scum who live miles away from me[:@] )

Direct Line is the first major insurance company in the UK that recognises named drivers’ No Claims history

If you have named drivers on your Direct Line car insurance policy, you (and they) will be pleased to know that we have become the first major insurance company in the UK to offer Named Driver No Claims Discounts.

This means that when we provide your named drivers with a quote for Direct Line car insurance, we’ll recognise every year they haven’t made a claim on your policy.

Taking advantage of this deal couldn’t be easier. Your named drivers’ no claims histories are automatically stored on our system, so when they come to apply for their own policy they simply need to give us your details online or on the phone and we can identify them immediately, at which point they will be able to receive up to 5 years' No Claims Discount on their own policy.

Does anyone know if they look at your age from when you submit a quote, or the age from which the policy starts ?

I think it might be worth checking again in 2 weeks.....

some may say lala land....
i think they are based on age at time policy starts, as that is when you insure the car, not when you ask for a quote.
Also when you do online it asks for DOB, so it should be based on that., also they'll ask that on a telephone quote.
i use DL, but i can see you've tried already.

ChrisC - The Direct Line recognising named drivers only applies if you have been a named driver on a Direct Line policy. So, if you're insured on your Mum's policy and she is insured with Direct Line, you can get a discount for that. If she is insured with somebody else, it doesn't count. Worth asking, but I don't think you'll get anything for it.

Chris do you not know anyone one further afield? I insure the LCR at my gf's in Southport. I am there half the week anyway but the Liverpool cost was over double the quote. Although I have not paid a new full year on a quote. (Upgraded my old policy for the new car) it did work out to the equivalent of £750 FC.

Thats why it's in the in laws now mate, saves between £400-£600 a time.

I'm thinking of going with Direct Line as a named driver again, & building up no claims this way - no wonder so many people go without insurance, it's ridiculous !!

Thanks for the feedback guys - I'll try again just after my birthday to be doubly sure :)

I'd get your own policy mate. It might cost more in the first instance, but over time it will really help.

If you're keen on building NCB, try Elephants 10 month bonus accelerator policy. It usually works out cheaper as your buying 10 months instead of 12, but also gets you a years NCB 2 months early. I did this for two years and Direct Line accepted the NCB as valid without question, which was handy :)

I cuurently use Adrain Flux as they were the cheapest when playing them off with greenlight! Privilege was always a little cheaper than DL for me over previous years even tho they are underwritten by the same people. Also I've had good quotes with First Alternative insurance!
