Information on 1.8 20V turbo engines

I am currently looking to put a 1.8 20V Turbo in a non VAG car as such :p

Anyway I was on the look out for a decent priced 225 engine out of the TT but have come across a Ibiza Cupra full engine for sale and am wondering whether it is worth buying this and having the IHI conversion plus 6 speed box or hold out for a tt engine or even poss the Leon Cupra R????

I had a Ibiza Curpa on a Y reg some years ago now and had a few mods by RSD but dont really know that much about the engine(s) in terms of engine codes and which is best? Looking for 300 - 350 bhp

Any advice would be great thanks :D

Actually I looked on your profile and it says you own a Renault 5 GTT. Is it going in this by any chance?

If you pick up a 1.820vt on Ebay or from a breakers then I am sure if you pay jabba sport a visit they can sort you out ... it may be cheaper to see Bill (Bager 5) as he is now doing IHI kits too.

Jabba kit for 210/225 includes:

JS IHI turbocharger
JS Exhaust manifold
Turbo intake pipe
Exhaust down-pipe
Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor
Sports Cat
Coolant return pipe turbo to block
Coolant feed pipe to turbo
Boost pipe from turbo to std pipe
Fitting kit (gaskets, bolts etc)
MAF Larger Diameter
440cc Bosch fuel injectors
Up-rated fuel pump
Boost Controller
Oil + Filter Etc..

It'll be a lot easier to have the turbo etc fitted before it's thrown in the car - but how certain are you that it'll fit?

Definetly fits and was going in the front, very tight fit and lots of bulkhead cutting so decided it might like to live in the boot :) fits not problem. I was going to run TDI box but a quick measure u looks like the 6 speed fits and is stronger than the 5 speed Ibiza block I am told.

At the moment I am looking at the most cost affective way, ie Ibiza setup + big turbo conversion? Or start with the 225 (which I would run for setting up) and then tune after?

I would like to leave the internals alone to start with hence trying to confirm the best engine to start with to run 350 bhp

Thanks for the advice so far ;)

No point in starting with the 225 mate. It's basically a different turbo and hence software.
To get 350bhp from 156bhp or 225 derivative you will need an IHI / GT28RS turbo or similar anyways..
As for internals, I think im right in saying that just because it's a higher hp engine as standard doesnt mean it has stronger rods etc, I think the Ibiza has the stronger, not sure which year bracket i.e (1999-2001 or 20001-2003)

Might be worth a search.

Well Bill was running 360bhp on his Ibiza and I am sure the 5 speed box was stronger than the 6 speed box  (I maybe wrong). and that blew up so he now has a 1.9 20vT

350bhp isn't easy to come accross in a 20vt.

I thought there was different internal parts on some of the 20V engines ie stronger conrods / slightly bigger pins & different size cylinder hear ports?

Could be wrong???

In regards to the needing new turbo & ECU I am aware of the options for that and need to sort the ECU either way but do not want to buy this engine to find a better block would be a 225 version?

Better block would be the 210 over a 225 but the changes were miner to the conrods apparently.

But not meaning to be cheeky here but "If your aware of the options" why come on here asking for information on 20vT's? If you know that the conrods are different on a 210 compared to a 225 (only really going to notice if you'r gonna go 350bhp+) why ask us?

People run 350 on these engines with standard internals. Minimal problems as far as this sites higher powered Ibizas S3's etc with regards to engine failure. But it's still taking a chance, stronger rods, bigger pins or not.

I have been told about the conrods by someone at work but tbh I would rather have at least one second opinion as he might have been talking out his butt  :D

Thanks for all the advice guys ;)

Might be worth looking into a rebuild with stronger internals then as well ££££:(

I know this is nothing to do with this thread, but where are you from Dunc, i have a suspision i know you. I also have an interest in R5's and what can be done to them, nearly bought one myself just for racing. Have been to the r5 national day and it was a blast.
