I've been doing a lot of digging around recently about BT conversions on a LCR, my big questions is which turbo? I'm sort of torn between a IHI VF22 (supplied by Jabbasport) or a Garrett GT2871R. My goals are 350 - 380Bhp mark. Does anybody have a conversion that might be able to give some input about what they think?

Cheers

I have recently just bought a gt2871r kit with manifold, etc.
Its not fitted yet but should be seeing around the 370 mark.
I dont know about that exact variant of IHI but some of their turbos are not able to be rebuilt
Garretts are well designed tried and tested turbos that many run
Have you also looked into the HTA kit dannylad has just got?? similar figures

Can I ask what / who's kit you went for? From my little understanding, the IHI kits spool faster than the GT kits, been quoted 1.65bar by 3,300rpm which seems very quick.

I like the idea of the GT turbo's ability to be "rebuilt" but are IHI's really unreliable as such?

Kit is second hand so unsure of original supplier
Never really looked into IHI's much so cant really comment on them

chocolate turbo = IHI

If thats the power you are after GT2871 will achieve it from about 1.6-1.8bar boost
VF22 wont.. and will die trying

rods yes,
on smaller 0.63 hotside spool will see 1bar at low to mid 3krpm and pull full on just before 4krpm till your limiter at mid 7krpm region

hmmm. i would have to disagree personally.
0.8x housings on stock cc engines is more lag than i personally would put up with.. for a road car

all of the vf series turbos are interchanable. and the one i would go for is a vf30 as these are the same size as the vf22 but have a smaller exhaust housing thus making the boost more quickly. i have a vf 28 on a starlet gt turbo and am getting full boost on this at 3400revs and this is only just smaller than the vf30 the vf30 is 390bhp capable at 1.6 bar and less on a good set up. the vf22 are old and were laggy on the scoobys
