Ibiza GTI 16V Smoking engine - Please Help!

Hi! Just after a bit of advice.
I can't understand why my car has suddenly started smoking under acceleration. Seems to be a bluey colour and smells like oil burning. Doesn't do it on tick over or if I rev it on the drive, only when you put your foot down under load and accelerate. I 've never thrashed the car and I have always looked after it i.e oil services etc etc.
The car has done 94,000 with pretty much full dealer history and always run on Quantun Synta Gold oil.
The current oil is Havoline Energy 5w 30.
I have taken the spark plugs out and they are all quite black (no oil on though) but I thought that might be because I only do short journeys?
I've also checked the oil fil cap and there are no horrors in there.
Any ideas as I am quite worried. Seems like it's going to be a head off job as the least.
Got a compression tester to check it out tomorrow but would welcome any advice, please.

Just thought I'd update you all! Put the compression tester on and all was well. 160 reading from all cylinders.
Then went back to basics and remembered a similar problem with my old Golf GTI. As I only really do short journeys I checked the breather hoses.
They were all blocked with thick creamy sludge. So I have cleared all the crap out and need to replace one hose as it has perished. I am hoping this will solve the problem? I hope that the smoke was coming out of the exhaust as the engine couldnt breathe properly and the exhaust was the only way to blow the oil out? I will get the spare hose tomorrow and post the result.
Any comments? Could this be the cause??

clear out the breathers first just in case - worse case scenario is rings

mine had been well thrashed in its past with a crappy ind kit needed pistons and rings by 55k

that has been mentioned before to me when i had burning issues... sadly i had a dodgy valve seal... but i think/hope youve sorted it.. if the pipes are blocked its got to go somewhere. zorst is the only other hole so i think your correct.

but i know naff all:D

the valves are still sealing the cylinder just oil is getting past the valve through the guide,old mk1 golf's used to suffer really bad from this

It sounds if your valve stem oil seals are on the way out and oil getting past them under load (getting down through guide) My old golf gti did it for 6 months and didn`t get any worse until the summer arrived and the oil get really hot and thin and boy did it smoke.......:lol: Weekends work and she was all better and good as new..........

Ahh man mine was owned by a Chav muppet & has a K&N + 117K

that was my first thought valve stem seals, Ford CVH engines were prone to these going to!

Hi there!

Many thanks for all the replies. I've cleared all the breather pipes out and cleaned the plastic mushroom filter thing. Although its better (not so much smoke now) it's still smoking when it's warm and I put my foot down to accelerate. So is it a toss up between valve stem seals or worn piston rings? The compression test was good on the rings but was only a dry test. How can I tell if it's one or the other without a strip down!

Well if it's still doing it after the clean up and the compression test is spot on stem seals is all it could be in my eyes you've knocked out the other options, not the most taxing job in the world on a DOHC motor so don't get ripped off on Labour charges say 2 hours tops for a skilled Mech!

Stands for Compound Valve Hemispherical - (geek I know!)

Yep my mum had an Orion 1.6 Carb CVH was my training ground when I was a kid, RR'd it once after giving it an overhaul, 93BHP from a 80K 1.6, not the most efficient of engines but was pretty good for a 8v carb fed motor back in 1996, still f*cking pants though.

Think they were bad try if I said Crossflow or Pinto how hard would you laugh!
