ibiza 1.2 timing chain

hey guys,

been out of the seat fold for some 3 yrs, bought myself an mr2, but have since aquired an ibiza 1.2 that has either jumped a tooth or snapped its chain.

I got the car for nowt, its a 52 1.2s with a/c full s/h and is taxed and mot'd till sept 2011....so would be a shame for it to go to waste...

Anyone had to pay out to have this fixed? done a search and not really found any answers to costs etc....

chain kit prices, any revisions to the chain, where to get it, labour?

any ideas or insights would be awesome :D

Cheers!

Andy

You can get the timing chain kit from Sere Motors on here (it has its own forum section on here) I do believe its about £100

Also I think the fitting is around £150 as far as I remember

I have the 1.2 myself and i've had no issues with the timing chain at all, the cars coming up to 90,000 miles

I think it's worse if it has actually jumped a few teeth though and might need a new engine?

The 1.2 engine has a chain not belt so will more than likely be the tensioner that fails

ive yet to open it up properly but from what ive read after a searchy everything seems to say chain snapping or jumping....

this wee cars done 78k i think....

so 100 quid for a chain kit?

suppose i should really take it apart to see for sure what the actual cause is :)

If its just jumped a tooth you might be alright, depends if the previous owner tried to start/drive the car afterwards. If they did then could be damage down in the bowls.

Check the valves and go from there.

Usually they don't snap the chain, it just jumps. The issue is actually with the tensioner, not the chain itself.

It's pot luck as to whether it ends up bending valves or not, only way to find out is to take it to pieces.

I've got all the modified parts as supplied by Dave at SERE but have yet to fit them (my car is also 52 reg), will be fitting them when it's warmer... if the car keeps going!

I've been there with an Octavia TDI which snapped it's belt, resulting in valve damage and smashed cam buckets... I don't want to see my Ibiza in the same situation!

Looks like I may have just wrecked my engine then :/ tried to start it a few times as I was in the middle of a road a 100 miles away from home

Still, the mechanics are looking at it now. Hopefully it's not too bad

A good tip if you're stuck in middle of road is to use the starter motor to jump accross (start it in gear a few times) will give enough momentum to get to safety!

My chain jumped an started bogging out when I wasn't moving then when I took it to the garage to have the brakes done it jumped another tooth all this did was knock the timing out between the two camshafts which ment it wouldn't start. There was no problems with any of the internals. I was lucky to be able to get hold of a timing chain kit the same day for 130 pound and the end of day bill came to 370 the was for fitting front disk and pads an timing chain. 12 months on an my car is fine with no issues an its a 02 plate 1.2 with 60000 on it

thanks a lot Louise, one more question.
i recently bought an ibiza 1.4 petrol, the car is covered by 28 days warranty on mechanical problems, the buyer told me the cam belt doesn't need changing as its a chain, but he was obviously lying about that. Do you think i can tell him to change it as it is more or less a mechanical problem as it has not been changed at 60k. the car currently has 85k. :(
