I really need some help peeps....

I have a 2001 ibiza cupra with 95k on the clock and....

last night i drove her a lil' to hard from 1st to 2nd, then after driving her normal again she crunches in 2nd gear. If i hold down the clutch for i dunno 2 secs or something then put her in to 2nd she's fine only when i change her straight away...

That make sense, anyone help me in what i've done to her???

Is your foot definatly fully down on the clutch?

I find when stationary in mine and putting it into reverse, i have to do this slowly otherwise it crunches

reverse is different as it has no syncromesh if I remeber correctly.

I'm no gearbox expert but it sounds liked you've screwed 2nd gear syncro, not sure how much to replace though

Is that a new gearbox then?? Sorry to sound thick just not sure what it is...

Hhmm im not sure to be honest but its not really a problem as im used to is doing it now so i just have to be slower when going into reverse

It's often cheaper to pick up a 2nd hand 'box than get the old one taken to bits & repaired

depends really. if a chunk of gear falls into another gear while the car is in motion the engine could stop suddenly or you could lock your wheels (and dipping the clutch won't help)

Joy...

Just got a quote from Seat they want roughly £1600 for a new box or about £800 labour and £300 for the new syncro...!!!

lol, sorry to laugh but where to seat get their figures from! who in their right mind would pay £1600 for a new gearbox on an Ibiza!

If it's just crunching and ok to drive then live with it for a while mate. I drove my old 106 Gti for over 6 months with a nice crunchy gearbox.

Best thing to do is get a second opinion from an independant garage that know Seat/VW's

Where in the country are you, bound to be somewhere localish to you

Look out for people selling from salvage.....write offs etc....

1600 is a silly price.....I paid 240 all in for my mk2.......i know its a totally different box, but it gives an idea of what can be done when you scout about :D

02A G60 box will fit in but ratios wont be identical I dont think.
02J is in ibiza..

Give JBS or Stealth a call for cost of replacing the worn parts.. (synchro's only most likely)

its almost certainly the syncro mate, look for a 2nd hand box, any garage can do it, its about a 3 hour job (i know this as ive replaced 2 gear boxes in my old car)

may as well get em to put a new and better clutch at the same time to save on labour. but it cost me about 400 for the recon box plus about 250 fitting.

If its a new Syncro it CAN be more expensive to get that fixed than to replace with 2nd hand box.
Do a google search for gearbox builders, there are some good ones out there.

Quicker acceleration in the G60 one Bill?? (and lower top speed?)

I wonder if replacement of a gearbox on an ibiza is similar to a cossie?
Cos i've done a cossie one, and that wasnt difficult (apart from the big fat heavy gearbox on the cossie) I mean swapping them, and not rebuilding.
