I also had a bitching Honda dealer similar to you reading me the riot act, he even said that the car was badly built as it would have been desinged for the Cypriot Hire Car market, so built with poor quality parts!! Unbelivable!!

Anyway, WRT to the warranty, unless you can prove (stamped and verified by VAT registered dealer [B)] ) it's been serviced at 1 yr old/10k miles your warranty is invalid (even the 2 year manuafacturer one), the UK cars come with that plus 1 year dealer extension. MotorPoint don't have to do anything as it wouldn't have needed a service at that point (when you took ownership), so it's your responsability to make sure it has been serviced to Seats requirements since then, which from what you've said you haven't......

Lesson to be learned, do your homework and check before leaving that you've got everything as agreed before driving the car off!!

Thinking back, I should have expected no less from the Dealer with regard to import status. However, the V5 looks like it's a UK Car so I should get 3 year warranty.

Only problem i've got left now is proving the service(s), if any.

If SEAT don't hold any information, i'm screwed.

IIRC i was told that the Ibiza TDi FR that i (almost) bought from MotorPoint was an import from Southern Ireland. I thought they were ex-rentals hence the number of them they had available and the high mileage (and missing valve covers on the tyres - are your ones missing?) Upon arriving in Glasgow to collect the car there were several bits wrong with it - namely the remote key (main key) was missing AND the gear knob was missing - they agreed to fix the 'problems' after refusing to knock money off the car and let me get them fixed - this went on for SEVERAL weeks (during whch i signed nothing and only parted with my deposit) until i lost patience and told them no thanks. @ that point they said ok, we'll give you.............£100 off for your 'inconvenience' once again, No Thanks.

I DON'T think you're at fault mate, but these days it seems to be 'unusual' to expect good customer service and honesty - 2 things i felt (i stress this is only through MY experience) that Motorpoint were lacking.

There should be several people on here that purchased their FR's from Motorpoint so i'd chat with them and see if they've had 'similar issues' and how they were resolved. I've also found the Citizens Advice Bureau VERY useful in the past! perhaps worth a call?

Yeah, I think my first move is to get the service sorted on Thursday. At the moment I haven't gone mental with them, but when I rang them I did express my feelings about not having the service history in the first place.

I dont want to burn my bridges, because I do actually want MotorPoint to try and help me.

But, it won't hurt to put a few calls in to CAB or Watchdog for example

Well i hope they do - if someone can't help you....speak to their boss and keeping going until you get results and make it clear what you want from them.

HOWEVER

I have found the V5C document and it says

"Date first registered 01 04 2006" and to an address in the UK.

So, it can't be an import, right?

Yeah it can be an import, this is quite common for imports. From what I can remember MotorPoint register most of their cars with a seperate company on import, this is likely for tax reasons. My Honda was the same, was advsertised as brand new, but i was second owner, by 3 days with 8 miles on clock!

It is likely you have an Irish or Cypriot (because of RHD) import, Motorpoint mainly sell imports or nearly new (upto 2 yr old) trade in/ex demo/old stock and pre reg cars. If you had a pre reg you would have the 3 yr (balance of) UK warranty.

Has your car gone over 10k miles?

Yes. 15K on the clock.

Looks like i'm screwed.

Yes unless:

1) you can get someone to do you a 'theoretical' oil and filter change and stamped [B)] (that's al that's needed at 10k if under a yr old (but I wouldn't recommend this!)

2) you never develop a warranty fault!

3) You can always buy an aftermarket warranty if your worried at no warranty, this could even be bought at a SEAT dealer (one that is happy for your business and not interested where you got the car from), after all you are going to be paying for them to look after it!!! Just tell them you bought it privately and ask their advice, don't even mention it's an import, just that your worried about the service not being done and whether this can effect your warranty.....

I like number 2.

Reminds me of my last car. I developed a massive fault TWO MONTHS out of warranty, and Skoda did nothing to help.

What's the good of a warranty lol.

You could always do a VIN check with dealer, this would show up all you need (or not) want to know of vehicle ID.....

Well

Here's some good news.

I e-mailed Seat customer services, and they confirmed that last night I was fed a complete pile of bullshit by the Seat Dealer.

My car is an import, so I only get a two year warranty. (Which I'm not too worried about as I saved £4K buying the car). I did NOT invalidate my warranty by just being "5000 miles over". The representative I spoke to said that even though cars should be serviced at 10,000, they are a lot more resilient, and going 5K over doesn't make a lot of difference.

So there we go smiles all round.

Yes, the warranty is fine.

There will only be a problem with the warranty if "something went wrong with the car due to it not being properly serviced" and they dont call 5000 miles over a problem. So looks like im home free.

However, I am going to take it up with Motorpoint.

As someone who imported a UK-spec Mk4 TDI Sport, it makes me laugh the crap that dealers will spout about imports, just to try and put people off buying them.

They all come out of the same factory, and (aside from the extra options I specced abroad that you couldn't get in UK) the only way you could tell mine was imported was from the PDI stamp in the service book was done by a dutch dealer.

If it saves you 4k and you lose the 3rd year warranty, who cares - just pay for an aftermarket warranty and you'll still have saved a fortune. Made no odds to me as the UK 3rd year warranty is dealer-supplied and limited to 60k - which I'd covered after 2 years anyway.

Incidentally, you might find you have to register the car with Seat for warranty purposes...

so i presume this address in the uk on the V5 has been contacted?

it its the previous owner ask them where it was serviced, then contact and ask said garage to supply a copy of the service work.

if its a company due to import tax reasons, ask them to supply where / when the car was brought from, (freedom of information act i think) then contact the resultant address for service info.

Glad to hear it's all good mate, like you said, i'd DEF. take it up with Motorpoint and perhaps ask SEAT just to confirm everything in writing - and keep that with your replaced service book and the like.

£4K - Great saving on a great car!!
