I need a new Turbo - opinions on what I have found please

Hi all,

Due to a change of job, my commute is now ~12miles round in sometimes standstill traffic. Last week I got the Overboost condition P0234 above 60mph, 3k+. AA came out and said they could only take it to a SEAT dealer. Dealer diagnosed a sticking Wastegate Actuator, new turbo at £1700...:blink: They got their £72 diag fee and a middle finger to the rest :D

I had JKM quote, £1215 for new or £365 to fit if I supplied.

But then a local garage quoted £120+Oil/Filter to fit if I supplied...!

Looking for a turbo, as the above garage said it could be one of two (when they quoted, one was £895, the second £650.).

Now Sod's law says this has happened as I am looking to change the car for a petrol due to the job change. So ideally I'm wanting to do it for as little outlay as possible as I'm not sure how long I'll keep the car. It's an 06 2.0TDI PD (BKD) with 52750 miles.

I came across this on eBay - New, 2 Year warranty for £330 delivered from Germany. So I guess once you factor in Oil/Filter,Pipes and Gaskets I'd be looking at £500 all in.

I'd appreciate people's views, good or bad :)

Bugger - sounds strange that two different types of actuator are used on a turbo for the same engine.

Is there any way of checking without having to pay yet more labour to have the turbo take off/engine dropped to check?

Phone seat, get the part number for the turbo then contact a decent turbo supplier or someone like R t.e.c.h who can fully repair your turbo, with warranty and a quick turn around for a reasonable price providing its only a VNT issue.

And the engine remains in place on any BKD turbo swap, they are a doddle to do.

if you take off engine cover you can see what type of actuator the turbo has
you will have a vacuum hose going to the top round cylindrical diaphram if it vacuum
if it electrical it will have a wiring block with about 6 terminals

Also rather than slap an expensive part on the car free off the mechanism, it's common for them to get a bit clogged now and then but a little bit of attention usually cures the problem.

Totally agree with seatman remove old turbo strip open vains clean up free off the comman vains known for sticking open. Get ready to refit replace gaskets and engine oil jobs a good one at less than £60 if doing ur self

Thanks for all the replies so far :)

Initially I did think about a stripdown/clean however I've yet to find a garage who would suggest it (You could read that as "an honest garage who doesn't just see me as a walking pound sign with a buggered turbo") as most have said it wouldn't work, even after I've suggested it due to wanting to move the car on (Most likely part exchange, providing I find a suitable replacement).

Unfortunately whilst I could tear-down, clean and rebuild a PC with my eyes shut, working on cars is not something I've had experience of nor can I afford the time penalty should I stuff it up!

I'll check to see which type of actuator my turbo has tomorrow.

Your turbo is right at the front too, just google mr muscle turbo clean, it works a treat and is easy to do. No need to strip down etc.

Just been out to take a look - I don't have an engine cover so I can see everything however I couldn't see/wasn't sure what I was looking for for the turbo - no obvious snail anywho! Any further pointers please? :rolleyes:

Also I've been reading about the Mr Muscle clean and one thread where it was recommended for the 2.0 TDI said you need an EGR delete to be able to reach the turbo without having to go underneath the car and undo 3 bolts...

Unfortunately I don't have a delete (If I did I may not have had to start this thread!) so I guess a DIY clean isn't an option.

Looked like it Seatmann :)

I traced some of the piping but nothing led to a turbo so it must be hiding.

I'll give Seat a call on Monday as per MJ's suggestion :)

I apologise for my late reply to this thread. I've just come back from America, but am pleased to say the Leon passed it's MOT (And therefore the Smoke test) whilst I was away.

The WG is still buggered but I'm definitely going to PX it now. What for I am not sure, torn between an A3 1.8TFSI, Rocco 2.0TSI or Ibiza Cupra. All DSG due to my license.

It's just finding one of each with decent spec to try and then decide upon!

Just to update, I ordered a Black Leon FR 1.8TSI yesterday. PX'ing the TDI for £3k, Dealer is damage-aware.

Karl - 2006 Leon Sport TDI DSG. Soon to be 2013 Leon FR 1.8TSI DSG.

All,

I know I've ordered a new Leon :)D) however it's going to be at least 7 weeks and I don't think my car is going to last that long. The other day she fell completely flat, blowing all shades of smoke on accel. and a code to say dodgy MAF. Cleared it and it runs OK (I'm not thrashing it at all though due to the WG) but now gives some white smoke around 2500rpm.

I'm considering having the turbo replaced for my own peace of mind but the garage who said will do it for me (For ~£160) claims there's two types and would need the car to check the part number.

Is this true? The previous talk in this thread for the turbo possibly having electronic/mechanical actuator has me wondering.)

Does anyone know which part number is right? Obviously I'm looking to do this quite cheaply as it's eating into value of the deal/my wallet. SEAT have also said it probably won't bump the value up for PX but I don't care about that. I don't think they seemed to grasp that I am only looking to replace it so that it doesn't kill the engine and turn that PX value from £3k DOWN to £0, not up!

Having seen various sellers on ebay selling "BKD" turbos (~£250 for a swap, £320 for new) but with most saying they're a swap for multiple numbers I just want to be sure it's right.

I'll be speaking with SEAT on Monday but in case I don't get anywhere with regards to getting the right part number off them (They should be able to pull up the exact part from my Reg/VIN surely?) I'd like to know I'm in the right direction.

Park her up and use public transport or get yourself a couple of hundred pound banger until you get your new car then sell it to the scrappies for £100 pound and you'll not have the labour costs of fitting the turbo. You'll not be down that much money overall and maybe even up money compared to buying and fitting a new turbo. I mean if they know about it then you're not trying to wipe their eye.

I had thought about this very much - but unfortunately whilst my car commute is 30mins max, public transport doesn't pass my place of work and so it would take me over an hour and a half to get to the office (45mins scheduled bus [excluding standstill traffic on my route] and then a 30min walk from the bus station to my office). Having spent the last 18 months commuting 2hrs each way on PT I can't go back to that again! Buying a banger is another option I perused. But for the couple of hundred that would cost I could spend ~£420 I've been quoted to fit a recon Garrett unit - a new unit is a no no - minimum £1050 (SEAT wanted £1700!!! :blink: )

I also have a duff Cyl 3 glowplug so may well get those replaced as last night I spent a good 20mins kangarooing until it warmed up. For circa £525 I could have >2 months of OK motoring before having 3 years of a warrantied worry-free blast in the new FR :D (And yes I'm arguing the trade-in value difference if I do get the work done! Cheeky sods are saying it won't make a difference! It will if I trade it to the local indie down the road!)
