How often does the dpf do a regeneration

Just wondering guys as once a week for the last few weeks , after a 30 ish mile trip when I pull up at the house the idle is high (1000 rpm) and the fans remain on when I switch the engine off. Now I have no warning lights coming on or anything. Just wondering tbh.

I do roughly 1000 to 1500 miles a month in total by the way.

Thanks

Hi,

If the vehicle is ticking over at 1'000 rpm, it's doing a regen, I often go a bit further, just to make sure it's finished regen. Engine fan's stay on to cool the exhaust and engine.

Regen, is dependant on pressure readings recieved by the ecu, from the cat/dpf filter.

Hi, in nearly 5 years of ownership and only 20k miles I have only witnessed 2 Regens where I was aware what was going on. In the first 4 years my car went 2 miles into town and back in the morning and the same trip in the evening, max 30mph and mostly in stop start traffic, and then about 1k total, miles of longer trips in a year. A recipe for DPF failure if ever there was one, but I did my research and every fill of fuel, bar 2 (BP Diesel), has been Shell basic diesel and every 4 to 6 weeks if I had not been on a longer trip, I would drive from J13 M6 to J15 M6 and back (about 35 miles), in 4th gear max. Car has run faultlessly with no lights or warnings....Julian

Hi All.
Interesting reading, Question when engine in regen mode does the engine warning light come on ?. I have noticed today that the revs on idle are about 1000rpm. Car is booked in with the dealers on monday , ill keep you updated.

Hi, no lights should come on, revs are around 1000rpm and fans are on even after a short distance (the only time I have heard my fans running!) and I think it is important to try and let the regen do it's full cycle, by continuing a run or making sure the next run is long enough. If you see lights then it's possible that a run won't clear it and it's time for dealer forced regen, not sure of present cost but a guess of about £70, and if that fails could be new DPF time at a very expensive cost! Sorry to sound paranoid about all this, but after I bought my car, it was expressed widely in the press, that people buying diesel cars with a DPF should be asked what their usage of the car would be by the selling agent, and be advised that if your journeys are short, a DPF equipped diesel might not be the best car to buy.......Julian

Hi Julian
Thank you for your reply, I ran car today (just to de-ice) revs on idle still 1000rpm, with No fans though ! ? When reving the car it would not rev above 2500rpm. Dealers tomorrow so ill update when I know more .

Hi gtracing

When the car is stationery and not in gear it won't rev past 2500 rpm. The 170 cr tdi apparently has a variable idle, which depends on battery condition, temperature and obviously dpf.

No bother. I had a moment of panic when I bought the car! It's apparently a safety limiter to prevent any damage to the engine.

My experiences on dpf and idle speeds after 1 year and 10K. My mileage is a mixture of trips around town and longer 100s of miles of motorway trips to visit family:

-Regen occurs more often on supermarket fuel; since running esso, texeco & BP I've noticed less regens. Fuel economy has improved too. Haven't tried Shell.
-When in regen my exhaust note becomes "boomy" and even burbles on run down. I like!
-Idle speed is variable - in winter when I am using a lot of the electrics and it's taking ages for the car to warm up my idle speed is 1000rpm. I also noticed after a service my idle speed remained at 1000rpm for a few drives afterwards; I guess they drained the battery.

Yeh. I've noticed that my idle has been higher this past few weeks with the temperature being a fair bit colder.

The boomy exhaust is great sounding. It'd make me want to get a stainless system!!

Turn off traction control, dip the clutch, should rev as normal.

I had the same moment of panic just after I installed a tuning box!
