How do you check the clutch fluid level?

Does anybody have any idea how I check the clutch fluid level on a Mk 1 Seat Leon S 1.6 03 reg? :confused:

Thanks very much, I saw this mentioned in the service book something about checking the Hedlux clutch level

Haldex is the four wheel drive system fitted to the Leon 4 that was not imported into the UK. Only relevant for four wheel drive cars.

Thanks very much guys. Is there any other level check that should be conducted on a service other than the following:

Oil
Coolant
Screenwash
power steering
brake fluid
Tyre pressures

any help much appreciated - cheers

I put this together some time ago from various publications, manuals and experiences posted on the forum.

Oil change service every 10K
- change oil and filter
- check brake pads and disks

Full service every 20K or 12 months, whichever comes first
Oil service plus
- change pollen filter
+ check lights, tyres, wipers, "fan belt", toothed belt, steering, driveshaft gaiters
+ levels in gearbox, coolant, hydraulic fluid, power steering, 4wd, screenwasher

Vehicle exterior
- Door retaining straps: grease and lubricate locking pins
- Sun roof: clean and lubricate guides

Not in service schedule but worth doing - lubricate bonnet lock.




Additional items
every 40K,
- change spark plugs (petrol engines)
- change air filter
- change fuel filter (diesel engines)

Not in schedule but worth considering: change HT leads (if you have them)

every 40K or two years
4WD cars, Haldex clutch
- change oil and filter

every 2 years
- change hydraulic fluid

Gearbox oil: VAG gearboxes are "filled for life", a self-fulfilling prophecy if ever I heard one. There is no stated service interval. I've changed mine at around 100K before now.


The cambelt should be changed at 4 years regardless of mileage, sooner if it reaches the critical distance.

this is what MJ said a little while ago:

1.4/1.6 16v - 40k or 4 years (£250/300)
1.8/1.8t - 60k or 4 years (£3/400)
2.0fsi/tfsi - 60k or 4 years (£3/400)
1.9tdi ve - 60k or 4 years (£250/300)
Early 1.4/1.9 pd - 40k or 4 years (£3/400)
Late 1.9 pd - 60k or 4 years (£250/300)
2.0 pd - 60/80k or 4 years depending on chassis number (£3/400)
1.6/2.0 CR - 80/100k or 4 years depending on chassis number (£350/450)

I wouldn't hold him to those prices now though.

Thanks very much for this, very useful indeed. I am planning to lubricate struts/mountings etc with 3 in one professional white lithium grease after first cleaning everything with WD40 - is this the best method?

On the cambelt replacement I am having mine replaced tomorrow along with the water pump as I haven't had it done ever since new in 2003. Total cost £270 inc VAT from a trustworthy local mechanic - which I think is a bargain.

White lithium grease is certainly suitable for lubricating moving parts such as door hinges, bonnet lock and so on. Unless they are caked in dirt or showing signs of sticking, cleaning shouldn't be necessary but won't hurt either, as long as you make sure all the WD-40 has been replaced by grease once you've finished.

The cambelt price is good, but it has been left a long time. There is no doubt that the stated intervals are very conservative, but then the consequences of cambelt failure are almost always dire.

Hi Muttley

Thanks for the reply. I had the cam belt etc fitted today, when they stripped down the belt unit one of the plastic pulleys was cracked and the belt was as slack as hell so I think I was a very luck man as I could have lost the car had I left the replacement any longer. They also replaced the water pump and aux belt so everything now good as new - thew:) Won't leave it that long in future for sure.
