horrible noise coming from gearbox

Today i have had a sqealing, scraping kind of noise coming from my 98 mk2 ibiza. you can hear this more when you let of the throttle, but when you drop the clutch the noise dissapears. i went to a garage and straght away thay said i need a new gear box. is it just thrus bearings that i need or maybe new clutch plates???????????

My mechanic has told me in the past that the boxes on these are far from bullet proof, i am on my 2nd 1.4 now and they are nowhere near as smooth as the bigger engined 2.0litres.

But dont worry too much theyre not massively expensive from a scrappy if it is the box thats shot and i think theyre something like £250 new iirc

it's the centre bearing

mine did it for 70k (started at 50k)

never went away, never got worse

do check gearbox oil levels

Had big problems with my 1.4 gearbox. Started of with a whining noise when letting off the gas, and then one day BANG! Blew the gearbox to smitherines.

I`d be sourcing a replacement box, now so that when she blows you dont have to buy an expensive emergency replacement. As you say Mork, a pattern is emerging.
