home ev charging

Please check that your 245 does not cost more than £35,000 RRP - Gov.uk EV website grant qualification criteria and if you haven’t ordered the CUPRA official.co.uk website finance calculator for the RRP price, you might be waiting a long time for the grant.

Also using a wall charger isn’t just quicker. Electrically its safer but far more important it will manage the tariff from your Utility (Electricity Company) to get the best Tariff for your EV and the time when this is available without having to intervene at midnight.

This thread seems the most logical place to ask my question rather than start a new thread.

Is it possible, presumably in the "e-manager" to specify, or limit, charging to certain time periods? For example, I might want to charge the car between midnight and 5 am.

I've tried setting the "offpeak" times and selecting the option but it doesn't seem to do anything. If I connect the 3pin charger at 5 pm, 8 pm or 9.17 am it just starts charging straight away.

I'd hoped there was the ability to connect the charger at say 6 pm but instruct the car to wait until midnight to then start charging but I'm struggling with that.

Is it possible from the vehicle itself or do I need to find a different way of achieving this?

Hi @.Griff.

I don't have the Formentor but my Skoda superb iV has the same powertrain and similar software for the emanager.

Yes you can achieve this as this how I run my car. On emanager specify your off-peak times and set a departure schedule. Then in the charge settings elsewhere there is a minimum charge option. That means that whatever time of day you plug in and regardless of tarriff the car will charge immediately to that %. Then it stops and starts again at the time you specified.

I have mine to 20% minimum and the 4 hours of charging overnight on Octopus Go is enough to take it to 95% and then just before 7AM ( my departure time) it kicks off again to push it to 100%.

Hope this helps

Thank you mate! I see what I did wrong now.

I set my departure time for 7 am each day and specified my offpeak times as midnight to 4.30 AM but as soon as I connected the car yesterday evening it started to charge.

However, I now remember that I messed with the "minimum charge" and set it at 50%. At the time the state of charge was around 19% so it makes perfect sense now why it started to charge straight away.

Thanks again!

That is a good point about the cost of the Formentor. but I don’t think that effects the grant for the charger only then£3000 grant from the car

Had smart meter fitted today and all seemed to go fine just got to waiters weeks now to make sure octopus get all the data then can have cheap charging between 12am and 4am if my sums are correct 13 KW Battery @ 5p per KW is £0.65 over 31 miles 2 pence per mile

I would be interested to see how you get on as I am in a similar situation but I live in a flat and have underground parking so no smart meter for me and need to negotiate with free holder too
Update 28.07.21 - I now have a booked confirmed Install date for my Smart Meter with Octopus of 23.08.21. They are also installing an isolation box for the supply, changing the supply tails to 25mm and upgrading the fuse to 100 amp. I have also now had an On Site meeting and survey with the Wall Box supplier and have agreed in principle to proceed. I chose the Octopus preferred installer “EOCharging” who were extremely helpful. The Wall Box will be an EO Pro Mini- non tethered in Black. The Wall Box does have smart features and the purchase of a TP REA 450 WiFi extender cured my lack of signal on the drive. I was advised by the site engineer that the car and phone app are very good for controlling the charge times to get the optimised tariff price between 00:05 - 04:30hrs (Octopus GO).
There were concerns in the initial route that I had drawn as I wanted the cable buried but was quickly put by the fact that this would involve another ”third party” to dig the trench and the cost ££££!
The Wall Box equipment itself is very compact on the wall in the drive and space should be fine for the equipment at the Electricity Cupboard end, although the EV isolation switch will need to be sited on the outside of the cupboard. I will send photos when its all done. My view so far - the reality of getting it all to join up is a nightmare! To say the least and that is NOT helped by the miss information that dominates the market. In particular, Gov Grant availability (£350) - You will not get a grant if the RRP purchase price of your Formentor is more than £35,500.00, this wasted 4weeks, Cable out the window- Yes but NOT Electrically safe and very dangerous using an unprotected extension lead (IP66 and inline or built in RCD), No chargers for the Formentor? Many of the listed installers have only cut and pasted the Gov OLEV list into THIER websites. Thire are plenty of chargers to meet your requirements, BUT take time to think through what you want and express them clearly and seek clarity from your installer. The charger will be part of your everyday life - THINK IT THROUGH (Such as being able to open the CAR DOOR!)
I could go on and on - May be a BBC Panaorama Special “THE REALITIES OF GOING GREEN” ??

I am glad you are getting there with this our smart meter instal was last week and was pretty easy took couple of hours. Seems to be working fine can see your use age on half hour basis on the octopus web site although you do have to wait two weeks from install for them to confirm that they are getting good enough reading to take advantage of octopus go. I found octopus energy ev chargers had work took ages to get quote and in the end was more expensive then they quote I had previously

Just an update on my end guys...got approval yesterday for an interest free loan from Home Energy Scotland and within a month I will have a 4KW solar panel install, a 7Kwh battery and a Zappi for the car and Eddi for the hot water.

Complete myenergi isntall with all the relevant hubs and CT clamps to measure consumption.

Currently on Octopus Go and considering the Outgoing Octopus to see if I can sell any back to the grid but will see how it goes first as I may be using it all in the house and currently Octopus will not let you have Outgoing Octopus and Octopus Go as it will be a loss to them.

Very excited about it all. I live in a reasonably sunnny part of Scotland so can't wait to bore you all with stats. Top marks to my installer for communication and guidance through the paperwork.

It took 3 weeks for approval, another month for install and goodness knows if we come across any other issues. But between all the grants etc ( we get both the OLEV and the EST grant in Scotland for the charger) I am getting the panels on free borrowed money, the charger for free and with a bit of luck reduce the gas bill as well for the hot water.

And once configured, I will not have to lift a finger!!!

Once we have a full electric vehicle as well in a couple.of years then the return on investment will increase significantly. Currently on my PHEV, I put petrol in once, I have done 1300 miles ( including a number of 80+ miles round trips) and I still have 145 miles of petrol range to go. Enough said!!!

This is summer time as well and we use the car more...once the term starts it will be reduced to school runs and weekend trips so I reckon I won't have to fill up with petrol for months.

Update - 23rd August, have just got my Smart Meter Install completed. Almost 2 months to the day after getting the car. The wall charger was due to follow but the installer has been infected with Covid so date has been put back until early September. Unable to use Smart Meter as there is NO signal on any of the Mobile Networks. Good news about the Grant. Will continue to update until it all works??

Considering a wall box charger and see their 22kw version isn't too much more. Probably worth the extra for future proofing.

You'll need a three-phase supply to the house and, unless someone can correct me, most homes don't have this and it's expensive to install/switch to it from single-phase.
