Hissing Noise from Engine Compartment

As per the subject title, I've noticed a hissing noise from the left handside of the dash when I'm accelerating through each gear. Never noticed it before, so I'm guessing that a pipe on the turbo has came loose and either exhaust gasses or pressurised air is escaping??

Am I correct in assuming it's the turbo? Does it sit low down in the engine compartment, behind the glovebox? Has anyone else encountered this? I had a quick look under the bonnet but I think a trip to the stealers is required, so I thought I'd ask you great guys first . I drive a Reference Sport 2.0TDi, 140bhp.

Apologies for all the questions, I'm not big on engine mechanics and was never a boyracer - making up for it now though! :D

Thanks in advance.

My FR TDI does this.. Its not any of the pipes, I checked those. I took it into the dealers and they said it was normal. :)

Unless you are experiencing a loss of power, its unlikely to be a boost pipe.

Thanks for the reples guys. It's definitely not a hissing noise that has been there previously - believe me, I would have noticed :(

I'll get it to the stealers for a look soon then, before the hiss disappears, along with the power!

Urmmm..... (TDI FR BTW)

I notice a hissing also between 2 & 3 RPM, I just thought it was the turbo spooling up??? Should I be taking it back to the dealers? Just done 11K and had its 10k service, they didn't mention that anything was wrong on that??? Should I be worried like the original poster?

When I grew a 'new' hissy noise on the 140PD in the company Octavia, it turned out to be a split plastic pipe fitting on a big boost/vac sensory thing at the back o the engine bay. Was only a small split in a 5mm bore pipe, but was a noticeable hiss !!

Spagley,

Did the dealers charge you at all for replacing the pipe? Or was it under warranty?

I've booked the car into the service department at my dealership on Wednesday. My Leon is a 56 plate, so still within warranty, I think!

They tell you everything is normal, get to a VAG specialist or someone other than a stealer and get it sorted, spool up noise is ok but not hissing = boost pressure escaping! Check all intercooler pipes being unseated from the crap connectors they have and splits on any intake pipework and vac hoses, check one by one for damage.

It was done under warranty with no problems, but then it was a pretty well defined 'hiss' - like from a bike pump - that had suddenly started to occur.

Good luck !

I also had this problem, went to the dealers and they said a hose had come loose. Fixed it under warranty though :D

OK guys, thanks for all the comments.

Update: took the car to the stealers on Wednesday. It's a 'leaking turbo intercooler pipe'. They have ordered replacement parts and I'm now waiting on a call to tell me when to bring the car in to get it fixed - all under warranty by the way.

As spagley says, this is a distinct hissing noise that all of a sudden appeared, sounding like a bike pump was connected to the left hand air vent! It's one of those noises that you just know is different from the norm.

Cheers.

Edit: How Freaky is that - I just hit the 'post reply' button and the phone rang. It's the dealers telling me to bring the car in next Tuesday.
