help with a possible n75

Sold the car to buy a....
I have scanned a friends car he has a 1996 passat 1.9 td
suddenly he will get a total loss of power followed by a cloud of smoke behind him then the power is fine again.

the code vag-com showed is

i did a few searches and came up with....
00575 - Intake Manifold Pressure: Control Limit Not Reached

Editing your spelling
i would swap the N75 and N18 valves see how it goes. not sure about the passat but they are on the back firewall of the engine bay, with the small vac hoses going in and out and an elec connector at the bottom. N75= black top, N18 (EGR control valve) is the white topped one.
