Hey all,

I'm at my wits end with this one and I'm hoping the SCN combined knowledge can help me.

Bought 4 brand new Michelin ps3 from ATS and within a week noticed the car wasn't driving properly, vibration at speed and literally rocking from side to side when at about 10mph. Had it in to loads of garages who could not find the fault. 3 times wheels were balanced and 4 wheel alignment done.

Stopped by kwik fit one Sunday cos they were empty, we took all the wheels off and balanced them, then checked the alloys, all looked good. Then another bloke said "look at the tyres, they're deformed". Sure enough, there was a pronounced dip/lump at a certain point on each tyre.

Took the car back to ATS and they said only 2 were bad enough to warranty. I argued but they said they'd only change 2. Anyway, fellas fits the first one and that was exactly that same as the one he'd just removed, worse in fact.

So, next thing I'm offered 4 brand new Pirelli p zero Rosso in exchange, that's all they had.

Took them gladly but they didn't feel brilliant when I first drove it, very noisy and heavy feel. To be honest I thought at the time that something was Erin but didn't want to look like a to55er.

Now, only 400 miles later these tyres have done the exact same thing. Jacked each corner up and spun the wheel, straight away could pick the spot where the deformity is.

Taking it back to ATS this weekend but my question is what could cause this to happen?

Car is now downright dangerous and crap to drive and I'm 150 miles from home!

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Have you had your tracking/geometry checked? Also get you wheel checked (without tyre) to see if they are warped at all.
Also make sure tyre pressures are correct.
Other than that no ideas.

Cheers

have you done proper 4 wheel laser aliment, not the type you see in kwik fit but places where they simply use a computer to reset the car geometry to that as it was when it left the factory

i had mine done here

http://www.banksidegarage.com/index.php/services/4_wheel_alignment

its now spot on, the steering wheel on my car was always just off centre and no one could fix it, kwik fit and other places simply said the tracking was fine, took it here and it was totally fixed. It is more expensive think it cost me £75 but is worth it

I would have said tyre pressures may be causing it. I certainly know that whenever I've had tyre pressures changed they just put about 30 odd PSI in and leave them. They don't put them back to what they were, or anywhere near manufacturer specs.

+1

The 4 wheel laser alignments pick up so much more/However if there is an underlying problem (steering knackered or shocks fcuked) it will return in a few hundred miles IIRC.

Yepp, 4 wheel alignment done using hawk eye system at Chris Mullins in Glos.

Alloys have been checked using hawk eye balancing system.

Going to show a mate tomorrow at work just to make sure I'm not going mad.

The only constant is the car an ATS and the fact that a brand new tyre showed the same problem leads me to think that maybe ATS stores the tyres wrongly?

I don't know, I'm grasping at straws here.

Going to order some R8 rep alloys and have new tyres fitted then I can rule out the wheels.

Really annoying now as I love the car otherwise.

Cheers.

okay feel free to laugh loudly at this but ... could it be something to do with the chassis? surely if you've had it all aligned by a specialist, wheels checked, alloys checked, then the issue could lie elsewhere? or would wheel alignment pick that sort of thing up?

Just my 2 p worth , is the car old? With a highish mileage?
I'm thinking it might be your shocks that are worn or someone has fitted the wrong ones

My shocks wore on my Volvo ( I know I know ) and did exactly the same thing , or as someone else said has it had a bad accident? It could be crabbing when driven instead of driven straight

Forgot to say that seat also did a health check on the car and came back ok.

Car is an 07 FR tdi with 38000 miles on.

Drove it back from Grimsby on the first day, 140 miles no problems. Fitted new tyres and all goes wrong.

Suspension, bearings, alignment and everything else have all come back ok.

Toying with buying some new alloys and wheels, these:

With a set of kumo ku39 on and booking it in to Badger5 for a lowering session. Hopefully any underlying problems would be found then.

Gonna try to get my money back from ATS first, might get messy!

i would be inclined to say suspenion / bushes at fault. but if this has all been checked then, clearly not.
wheels would be picked on apon balancing if they are in anyway buckled/warped.

check the dot codes on the tyres (4 digit code in brackets first 2 didigts are WEEK second 2 are year i.e 1209 is 12th week 2009) if they are more than 4 years old, then go back and complain!
and if its only since fitting different tyres, maybe they have stored them in wank circumstances . . .this is very possible tbh.

Well I would say its either a problem with your wheels or ATS have some old stock tyres that have been stored very badly.
To show up in such a tiny mileage it isn't suspension are alignment related.
One last thing are the wheels genuine Seat wheels?
If not do they fit tight on to the hub or do they have spigot rings to make them fit? Or are they missing causing the problem.
Also tyres are never 100% true if you watch them on a balancer they do deviate slightly but this will not cause you any problem so are you 100% the tyres are causing your problem?
Or is it just the case the wheels have been off and back on and not centralised properly.

Just my opinion.

Wheels are genuine 18" andromedas an in immaculate condition. No dings or burn marks at all. I've spun the wheels and watched the edge of the alloys, both inside an outside edges, no noticeable wobble or deviation.

Those wheels aren't genuine MAMs, just R8 reps from a local alloy dealer. How much are those alloys mate?

I'll check the stock numbers later, could be a good call that as the bloke mentioned they don't sell many of these tyres due to the price.

I meant the alloys I'm looking at buying aren't genuine MAMs, just r8 reps.

ATGNI, did you buy the car from Westgate Seat in Grimsby?

They're normally pretty good at finding problems, they do actually 'test' the car rather then just plugging it into their diagnostics machine. Mine is in there at the moment checking the flywheel, hopefully it'll be a positive outcome for me. Just thought I'd add my 2p about the garage.

Danny - the car was supplied by nunns Mazda of Grimsby but was originally bought from westgate by the last owner. Westgate did the injectors & loom in dec and it's been to blade seat in glos last week. All came back fine. Although I'm not filled with confidence as they missed the original tyres being out of true.

Currently sat in ATS arguing my case, I hope this doesn't get messy, I could do without it.

How did you get on?

So what was wrong with the original's?

Did you see them jack the car up, i'm wondering were they jacked it and what they might have damaged. . .
