help! smoke coming from interior

i just got back from driving to the ATM machine and a problem occurred. smoke was coming out from the fans and a smell of like steaming water ?? damn i was planning to go out tommrw and i def need it for an exam on monday grr. the water temp showd normal, there was no spewing of anything i could see in the engine bay it was weird i took out my stereo and it wasnt that i thought maybe it was a connection or something. grr.

when i tried to start the car (before this happening) it didnt start first time, all i can think of is maybe a tube from my washers came loose? or water got into the connections. oh yeh and IN 01 came up which i think means i needa service.

Sounds like you've got water in the fanhousing/motor.

Check the pollen filter - passenger side, above the glovebox under the bonnet, under the flimsy plastic cover that goes across the scuttle area. If the filter feels wet then you've got water leaking through it into the fan and the heating system. Had this on mine and ended up replacing the scuttle cover as it had cracked/perished with age. £25 for a new one from the stealers.

If it isn't the scuttle cover, then check the drain holes from the scuttle area - these quickly fill up with leaves etc. and you can then end up with standing water in the panel. This will then slosh around as you drive and can end up in the heating system as before.

yeh went to a garage ...but its sunday so they cant do anything grr. they said its probably the heater matrix ...but as they gave it a quick glance over i think ima check that pollen filter etc thanks.

arghh man i reallly dnt know wot to do they wont have this fixed before 1pm monday so i wont be able to drive to uni for my exam.

how much are they to replace? so i can get a rough idea before i get bumped

hmm i just realised that if i turn my heater switch to cold even when the heater is not on the smoke wont come out so i was jus being a baby about the whole smoke thing, think ima do this for a while till i get it fixed. got a haynes manual and thinking about doing it myself. arghh im refusing to give £250 for a mechanic just to change my heater matrix (well thats my thinking for now but ill probably give in sooner or later grr). anything else to change while i got my whole dash out? might aswel do it now right.

im not losing coolant! so its not my heater matrix ...took it to a dealer (well actually i went to pick up my new front cupra splitter ..but thats another story) the guy had a quick look and said its weird ..he thought it was heater matrix but then saw the coolant too. didnt say much wanted to book it in to see what they could do but for £40, i ordered my Vag-com cable a few days ago so ima wait and see what i can do for nothing lol.

maybe water is going on the manifold and smoking up through the bulk head have a look for holes in both foot wells!
