Help, revs behaving strangely on boost on LCR stage 1

Hi guys,

I have an odd problem with my MK1 LCR. I tried searching the forums but to no avail.

The problem i am seeing is as follows:

When in 6th gear (also happened in 5th), at just under 3000 revs, when i step on the accellerator fully, there is a surge from the turbo and the car takes off (not literally) - but the revs do an odd thing. The needle shoots from 3000 to 4000 REALLY quickly, then either hangs there for a second and a half, or drops a little, then starts going up as normal.

I cant say I've noticed it before, but when planting my foot i am usually looking at the road. It doesnt happen every time as after sitting in traffic for 10 mins and trying it again, the rev counter behaved as it should, a progressive climb.

The car has been stage 1'd by Bell Autos and has no other modifications on it.

Any ideas?

hmm possibly, i havent noticed anything when changing gears. There was no decrease in the power either (then again, i dont know if there should be with a slipping clutch).

Sounds like a slipping clutch to me also. You're asking for trouble booting it in sixth at 3,000 rpm, that will put the maximum amount of stress on the clutch. You wouldn't notice any trouble changing gear initially with the clutch slipping.

ok thanks for the confirmation on that.
I'll take it easy now i think until its replaced.

Any recommendations on the clutch? Just get a standard or should i be looking elsewhere?
I dont know the torque figures, but i imagine 250+ with a remap so want something that will cover that.

Thanks
Tim

It may not need replacing for some time. I would think it will be fine as long as you don't try and put the maximum amount of torque through the clutch in higher gears, best to change down one or two gears as necessary.

I would imagine that even a new standard clutch would struggle under those conditions, even with a new/uprated clutch I still think its kinder to change down a gear or two.

I'd say a new uprated clutch, covers all areas...

Also, depending if you have any future plans for performance upgrades you know you'll have a clutch thats up to the task... just plug and play your future mod's then

No, if i leave my foot planted and the rev counter eventually behaves as normal. The speed is consistent throughout, its just the rev counter that behaves strangely. Behaves normally from 1000 through to 3000, then when the turbo kicks in and the max torque, it shoots up to 4000 really quickly, then hangs for a second or 2, then carries on round up to 6000/7000..

(obviously not in 6th gear, that would be like 250mph or summet. lol )
