help required on a few subjects for my toledo

Hi all.

I just got my hands on a 1997 2l auto toledo sport and it has just a few teething problems that need tending to. So I kind of need advice from any1 that can help, I tried another forum but don't seem to be getting any replies.I aint no mechanic but can repair cars when i put my mind to it.

first up; The mot failure sheet mentions power steering pump drive system defective, What I'm trying to work out is if the pump is defective or if it's the steering rack.

I'm looking for the order the spark plugs/cylinders run in to locate the number 1 cylinder, so as to check the timming: as in; looking from the front of the car into the engine bay do the cylinders go, from left to right, 1 2 3 4 or is it the other way about, 4 3 2 1?. The problem seems to be the engine misfiring, I've replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm and spark plugs which make the engine sound a lot healthier than when I first got it but it still sounds like it's missing a bit only not as bad. So i'm thinking about checking the timing myself to try and save some cash for the replacement brake discs and pads.

Are the brake discs and pads easy to replace??, on both rear and front.

and finally..............Does any1 have a replacement gear shift lever? I've tried a local seat dealer and they tell me the part has been discontinued, also tried a few local scrapyards without even a trace of a toledo in any of them.

Any help in here would be appreciated.

with thanks

There wasn't even any point in checking the timming there nowt wrong with it and anyway, the timming gun I have doesn't fit the plugs as they don't have the little screw on caps, lol.

if its the 2.0 8valve 2e motor then missfires were common even after doing all the obvious things and unfortunately can be hard to trace by an experienced tech.
was normall the pums gone on them.
as for the gearbox without casting doom the dont last very long in the auto version as ive changed dozens of them for loss of drive etc

update on toledo's progress

Hi all.

Just a wee update on my toledo's progress.

Booked it in for an mot and it didn't fail on much. a few bit's needin some welding done, 2 rubber mounts missing off exhaust and a rear tyre and it's passed and eventually on the road.

The emisions test passed no problem after the last mot failure said they couldn't do test cause of missfire and guy a test centre said the engine was running really sweet, which was my main concern about the car when I first got it, so it seems that replacing the rotor arm, dizzy cap, plugs and leads seems to have done the trick, that's saved a hunt round the local scrapyards for an ignigtion module.

needs a few advisory things done but I can get them as time goes on once the car is mot'd. Looking forward to getting on the road with it as it seems to drive realy well and finnally I have a car with a bit more acceleration than the cavalier I have been driving for the last 2 years.
