Hello there!! I'm having a bit of a resource crisis and have come over here to ask a question. My girlfriend is looking at buying a 54reg Fiat Stilo 1.9tdi. But (apparently) the garage took the car out for a spin and ran it out of diesel. So they have taken it to a garage to sort it out. But upon coming back from the garage they told the car dealers that it had "weeping injectors"
So my question is; What the hell are weeping injectors?? And is this likely to be an escalating issue in the future? And lastly; Will sorting these out just be a case of like maybe just replacing some sort of rubber gasket? Obviously the garage has said that they would sort the car out before trying to sell it, but I'm just a little concerned as the g/f is very keen on this car and don't want her to get ripped off.

Thanks in advance for any help

Weeping injectors means that they're not shutting off properly, a bit like a dripping tap. They only open at specific intervals to inject fuel, and (it it's the Fiat commonrail diesel engine) the injection pressure at them is round about 1800 psi. When the injector closes it's supposed to shut off completely, but a weeping injector will dribble fuel into the cylinder causing excess black smoke and such problems.

New or recon injectors is the only answer really, although a dose of injector cleaner is most likely what the garage will do and say they've fixed it.

Personally I'd walk away from that car and find another.

Maybe they mean by "weeping injectors" that there is diesel leaking round where the injectors bolt into the head or where the pipework connects to the injectors - and it could be a sign that after the car ran out of diesel, the garage loosened the injector pipework to purge air through, and buggered up (maybe crossthreaded) the injectors or pipework unions when they refitted, and they're arse-covering by claiming the problem was already there.

My wife's corsa sri cdti had this problem just before we bought it(spotted on test drive), diesel leaking outside the head from the injector seals.
Garage fixed them before we picked it up.
2 years later and all is fine and the bloody thing goes like a train, will regularly pull 120mph no problem!

Thank you all so much for your advice, it is muchly appreciated, plus I've learnt something today!!

I really don't know what to do now!! I think she kinda has her heart set on this car, but the general consensus is veering to the "walk away"!!!

So if the garage say they've replaced the injectors how can you tell if they actually did or whether they used injector cleaner? Will it still smoke?? Or is it a temporary fix that'll come back in x amount of time?

BTW it's the 1.9 JTD engine, which is the main reason we followed this car up as I read a lot of positive things about this.

That engine is excellent its also fitted in the vectra and the astra.
The 150hp model is superb!
If the garage promise to rectify prior to collection where is the problem?
I am an ex diesel fitter by trade!
