Help needed... have Diagnostic codes...

Evening all,

Was really hoping it wasn't to come to this but searching brings up so many variations similar to my symptoms but nothing bang on!

Leon Cupra 1m1... 59k, bought a few weeks ago from a couple who had it as their third vehicle = not used much.

Expected a few teething problems getting it up and running ( do around 250 miles a week )

Brief background... had running issues, couple of mornings would start, sounded rough and noisy, power delivery was intermittent, sometimes overboost and then no boost on and off from 2k up to 6k, sometimes no boost.

Noticed oil was low, I changed it completely. Sounded better, started fine, but still running / power delivery issues and the engine management light eventually came on.

Had codes read yesterday morning (Thanks Tom)... got the following three codes:

17704 - Error in mapped cooling system (check temp sensor and thermostat)
P1296 - 35 - 10 - - Intermittent
17705 - Pressure Drop between turbo and throttle valve (Check DV)
P1297 - 35 - 00 -
17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (add)
P1137 - 35 - 00 - System Too Rich

Now I went and bought a CTS from Seat dealership, changed that and then left it to cool, started fine, drove fine so off I went to Peterborough (from Leicester). No boost to speak of but as the codes had been reset and with a new CTS I expected some run in time.

couple of short journeys today but as the temperature seems to take 10 miles or so to get up to 90, it never really 'got warm'. No real problems but still felt lacking in the power department.

Now, coming home was different story. Took the usual 10 miles or so to get to 90, but then the temp on the dash was fluctuating between 60 and 90 seemingly at random. Then after about 25 miles it was really struggling to keep pace, when I came to a roundabout and stopped to wait for a car, it stalled. Started fine straight after but still low on power. it has continued to do this all the way home.

It seems odd as when you give it the beans, it hesitates then pulls, but then if you sit at 2k revs, in second, doing about 20mph, it struggles and tries to stall.

Being this time of night and the short night's ahead I wanted some advise / pointers on the above if anyone has some!

nailed on certainty DV? Air pressure leak causing too rich on fuel? Dodgy thermostat causing temp issues?

Oh, and no warning lights all the way home, so for all the great help I have with VCDS, no EML means no codes right?!

Thanks in advance, I realize it wasn't all that brief

(BTW, I'm back to searching in the mean time, I realize they are common issues to a point :) )

it has now decided to fire up, rev up to 2k, gradually drop to 1200 and then miss, and stall. didn't even get off the drive.

Won't be back until 4.30 but any pointers would be appreciated... everywhere else I've seen these problems, the cars have always been running, albeit with less / intermittent power.

MAF unplugged tonight, ran fine, albeit with an extra warning light (not EML)

Source a new one tomorrow (Bosch ones are £91?! )

Then its boost leak tracking if any body could point in the right direction?

Temperature fluctuating like that will be the thermostat, cost around £27 from dealers.

Could be a wild goose chase but have you checked the coilpacks? Run the engine then unplug them 1 at a time. If the engine wants to die, it's ok. If no change it's dead. Just had mine go a few weeks back and that was unpleasant.

It does sound like the MAF is possibly at fault, may be worth cleaning it with some carb cleaner, or isopropyl alcohol - just let it dry properly before plugging it back in.

I'd definitely get the car scanned - either VCDS or a handheld would show any 'intermittent' faults.

You need a thermostat then the temp will stay at 90.
17705 is an air leak and my guess is under the inlet manifold.
I have a working maf here you can buy, can post it tomorrow now (pm if interested.)

Thanks guys, PM sent...

Have had the scan and results are as above... have unplugged MAF when I got home tonight and it ran fine.

Will have to trip into work tomorrow with the MAF disconnected (will trial it tonight around the village) and then pick up a thermostat on the way home... oh and find someone to buy a MAF from :)

Just to add to this as it may be search hit later on....

If you have running issues... unplug your MAF and see!

It has ran like a dream with it disconnected (ok, maybe not dreamy, but its running properly, idling properly and pulls fine)

have a good MAF on it's way but this check is so simple and easy, it must be a first port of call!

Thanks all for your input... thermostant and new gasket, and new MAF being fitted tomorrow...

Oil filter ready to be changed, and 4 NGK laser platinum plugs ready too... on offer at ECP at the moment!

Maybe then I can look into fixing the rear seat mechanism (not the usual plastic clips) a replacement for the cracked rear light, and work out how best to change the stereo so I can plug my phone in via AUX....

Look forward to it?!
