Head Gasket.

At what age/mileage can a head gasket start to go??

I was just wondering as my car is 9 years old and has 98,600 miles on the clock and there are no signs of it starting to go.

my dads old golf did 170k before his went. all deppends on how the cars driven. i would think with the right maintance you should get over 150. but saying that ive heard of cars going a 80/90k

Ive heard of the head gasket on some cars going at less than 80k!

My old 1.4 had 102k miles and the gasket was fine. Besides ive heard you can skim the head if the do go. Cheap fix, but not sure how true this is.

it isnt a big deal if the gasket goes. just take the head off. get it skimmed so it seats properly. new gasket not sure if you need new head bolts. some types are stretch bolts. tighten it up. stick a new cam belt on it. then time it up. but adding to that if you take the head off you might as well change the oil seal and such like.

Mines gone at 117,000 miles, cars still running and giving 100% performance. Occasionally some coolant gets into one of the cylinders and i go down to three for a few seconds, but it just gives the VTS lads a vague hope of catching me up

Cost of overhaul for mine is £550, thats 6 hours labour, new cambelt kit, skimming the head, port and polish and the new gasket fitted along with coolant and oil etc. Not decided whether i'm doing it yet as i have the 207 for my run around.

Well just put a deposit on my first house, which is why cash is tight and it has a great big garage to store the cordoba in until a point where it can be fixed and put back on the road. However the Mrs is fighting to get rid of it as she feels it's a costly toy to keep.

But as it helped me through a rough patch in my life by giving me something to focus on i feel i should return the favour and help it through its rough patch

i've bought 2 G60 metal head gaskets, they last forever

fiat ones last until you get them off the forecourt lol, my mates punto went after 35K
