Hi,

i have been reading through the forum and have seen a few posts on this problem. Basically, my leon has gunk on the underside of the oil filler cap. Now, I have read that short journeys can cause this and that it is just condensation. I cleaned it off a few days ago and when I checked this morning, it was back but there was also some on the bottom of the dipstick. The thing is that it was on the dipstick a few days ago because I let the oil level drop down too low. There does not seem to be any mixing of oil in the coolant and the temp is at a constant 90. What I am asking is whether or not it is worth my while changing the oil and flushing the engine for this problem or in anyones opinion is it something more serious. Also, she has been dying lately when I am braking coming onto a roundabout, etc. Any ideas why this might be happening? Any advice much appreciated as I could do without forking out for a head gasket if that is not the problem?

Thanks, David

You won't so much see oil in the coolant as a loss of water - whats the coolant level doing? If its dropping then that could indeed point towards head gasket.

I think I would be tempted to do an oil change, then take it for a good run (length I mean, not just thrash the arse off it). Then assuming it looks ok, keep a close eye, checking the oil and water levels, and oil cap every day for mayo.

Alternatively, there is a chemical test - looks like a big syringe that you suck up some coolant with, and if the head gasket has gone the chemical in the tube already will make it change colour.

Not sure where to suggest David - I've only seen it used by a friend who is a mechanic when I took him to look at a car recently.

I guess try your local motor factor (not Halfords, can't imagine they would have a clue!).

If you are not loosing water I'd say thats a good thing.
