Hard pipe replacement

Was wandering if I could swap out the "hard" pipes that run all around the engine bay with silicone vacuum tubing? I.e. will it be ok to do this, it's not the sizing I have the problem with.

The pipes in question are all those running to the black box behind the washer bottle, that run down the left hand side of the rocker cover, down the injector rail etc etc.

Oh and what does the black box actually do?

Thanks,
