Welcome to the Mk2 Leon (1p) Brake guide. This guide is intended to help with current brakes indentification, as well as self maintanance and replacement.

Brake Info
All brakes are single piston floating calipers with 1 piece discs. All models have TCS and ABS.
All brake/discs setups should be compatible with each other. They are common to all Mk5 Golf (A5 Platform) base cars. this means upgrading is very simple. Ie; the 345mm Cupra brakes are a very common upgrade for increased braking performance.
All MkV Golf platform cars Have a 5X112 bolt pattern.

Changing Rear Pads
The following guide shows details how to change the rear brake pads. The photos are based on the 286mm system, although all other sizes should be very similar.
First of all, tool wise, you need:
2x spanners or 1x spanner and 1x socket. (cant remember the sizes) This is needed to remove and refit caliper bolts.
1x Brake caliper winding tool. This can be borrowed from a friend or purchased from somewhere like halfords: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_214227_langId_-1_categoryId_165469
Brake pads pair: 1K0 698 451 D (for the 286mm rear disc type)
Contains 4x pads, 4x bolts, 4x retaining clips
1. First of all RELEASE HANDBRAKE. Obviously the car needs to be on a flat ground or choked up to stop it from rolling off!
2. Undo bolts to remove the caliper from carrier.
You need two spanners, (or 1 spanner and a socket) to turn the end bolt, while the bolt in the middle is kept still from turning.
3. Remove caliper from carrier.
Pull away caliper from edge of disc, should be fairly free, if not give it a gentle whack with a rubber hammer.
4. Remove pad retaining clips and remove pads. Ideally, when you place new pads in there, you should put some copper grease on the back of the pads to help stop squealing.
5. To refit the calipers, you firstly need to wind back the pistons, otherwise they will not fit over the thicker new pads.
Place the tool in the caliper as per the picture below.
You will need to sloly turn both the handle, and the collar, alternating between then. It may be a slow and stiff edprocess. Turn until the piston is a fair way in. The picture below shows how much I need to wind mine back in.
6. Finish off by replace the calipers over the pads, then bolting up the caliper to the carrier.
Completed project:
It took me around 15mins per caliper excluding jacking up time.
The front calipers are a slightly different design, but the process is the same.
Discs
The replace the front discs is very easy.
You will need to remove the caliper and carrier. to do this remove the 21mm carrier bolts behind the disc itself. the caliper assembly should be free.
The discs has one small Torx bolt on the face that needs to be removed. Once removed the disc should become free. If it is still stuck tot he hub, use a rubber mallet to bang it away from the hub.
Reverse the above for refitting, ensure the wheel bolt holes are lined up the the hub holes.

I intend for this guide to be a definative guide for braking on the mk2 Leon. If you have any information you would like to add or any further questions, please let me know. I will add more info as I do other braking tasks.
