Welcome to the Mk2 Leon (1p) Brake guide. This guide is intended to help with current brakes indentification, as well as self maintanance and replacement.

Contents:
  1. Brake Information
  2. Changing Pads
  3. Changing Discs
  4. Replacement Parts
  5. Brake Upgrades
  6. More coming soon...

Brake Info

All brakes are single piston floating calipers with 1 piece discs. All models have TCS and ABS.

All brake/discs setups should be compatible with each other. They are common to all Mk5 Golf (A5 Platform) base cars. this means upgrading is very simple. Ie; the 345mm Cupra brakes are a very common upgrade for increased braking performance.

All MkV Golf platform cars Have a 5X112 bolt pattern.

Changing Rear Pads

The following guide shows details how to change the rear brake pads. The photos are based on the 286mm system, although all other sizes should be very similar.

First of all, tool wise, you need:

2x spanners or 1x spanner and 1x socket. (cant remember the sizes) This is needed to remove and refit caliper bolts.

1x Brake caliper winding tool. This can be borrowed from a friend ;) or purchased from somewhere like halfords: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_214227_langId_-1_categoryId_165469

Brake pads pair: 1K0 698 451 D (for the 286mm rear disc type)

Contains 4x pads, 4x bolts, 4x retaining clips

1. First of all RELEASE HANDBRAKE. Obviously the car needs to be on a flat ground or choked up to stop it from rolling off!

2. Undo bolts to remove the caliper from carrier.
You need two spanners, (or 1 spanner and a socket) to turn the end bolt, while the bolt in the middle is kept still from turning.

3. Remove caliper from carrier.

Pull away caliper from edge of disc, should be fairly free, if not give it a gentle whack with a rubber hammer.

4. Remove pad retaining clips and remove pads. Ideally, when you place new pads in there, you should put some copper grease on the back of the pads to help stop squealing.

5. To refit the calipers, you firstly need to wind back the pistons, otherwise they will not fit over the thicker new pads.
Place the tool in the caliper as per the picture below.

You will need to sloly turn both the handle, and the collar, alternating between then. It may be a slow and stiff edprocess. Turn until the piston is a fair way in. The picture below shows how much I need to wind mine back in.

6. Finish off by replace the calipers over the pads, then bolting up the caliper to the carrier.
Completed project:

It took me around 15mins per caliper excluding jacking up time.

The front calipers are a slightly different design, but the process is the same.

Discs

The replace the front discs is very easy.
You will need to remove the caliper and carrier. to do this remove the 21mm carrier bolts behind the disc itself. the caliper assembly should be free.

The discs has one small Torx bolt on the face that needs to be removed. Once removed the disc should become free. If it is still stuck tot he hub, use a rubber mallet to bang it away from the hub.

Reverse the above for refitting, ensure the wheel bolt holes are lined up the the hub holes.

Other

I intend for this guide to be a definative guide for braking on the mk2 Leon. If you have any information you would like to add or any further questions, please let me know. I will add more info as I do other braking tasks.

Brake Upgrades

Here is a selection of possible upgrades for the brakes on the Mk2 Leon.

Please bare in mind when upgrading the brake setup, all replacement parts will be expensive.
Ie; AP racing 6pot pads - Ferodo DS2500 £220 a pair!

1. Cupra/S3/R32 Front brakes. (Around £550)

This is a common upgrade, due to the low cost and cheap replacement OEM parts.
This consists of single piston calipers and massive 345mm vented discs. You will need 18inch wheels for this I think. Link to part numbers and cheap supplier: http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=186468

2. AP Racing 4 piston Caliper Big Brakes (Around £1500)

Comes with: 2 Piece 330x28mm Slotted Vaned Rotors, 4 Piston Calipers, Caliper Mounting Brackets, Stainless Steel Brake Lines (Front Only), and Street Performance Pads (Front Only)
Requires: 18"+ wheels and possibly spacers
http://www.apracing.com/info/produc...i+-+Front+4+Piston+Kit+CP5200-1056+_1728_1064

3. AP Racing 6 piston Caliper Big Brakes (Around £1900)

Comes with: 2 Piece 330x28mm Slotted Vaned Rotors, 6 Piston Calipers, Caliper Mounting Brackets, Stainless Steel Brake Lines (Front Only), and Street Performance Pads (Front Only)
Requires: 17"+ wheels and possibly spacers
http://www.apracing.com/info/produc...Di+-+Front+6+Piston+Kit+CP5570-1015_1729_1064

4. Seat Brembo Brake Upgrade (Around £1450)
Offical Seat Brembo Brake upgrade. 4 piston. Part Number: 1P0071450
18inch wheels required.

5. ECS Stage 5 Big Brake Kit (Around £1500)
6 Piston Monobloc Porsche Calipers (5 colours available)
- OEM Porsche Pad Hardware
- Hawk Brake Pads - High Performance Street Compound
- ECS DOT Approved Stainless-Steel brake lines
- ECS Custom Caliper mounting hardware
- ECS Lightweight 352x30mm 2 piece directional rotor
Available from www.awesome-gti.co.uk

6. Alcon 343mm 4pot Big Brake Conversion (£1550.00)
Alcon Big brake conversion consisting of Alcon 4 Pot calipers, 343mm rotors with seperate bells, carriers and pads to suit the application.
The car will require 18" wheels to clear the outside edge of the calipers and spacers may be needed to ensure there is no fouling of the face of the caliper on the rear of the wheel.

Cupra has 286 x 12 rear discs.

Great thread, some info about replacement pads and discs only would be nice.

Hmm not sure on this one, where did you get that info?

I'll try and build up a database of replacement parts and costs. :)

UPDATE: added more info...

Dan, not wanting to be nasty, but 330*28mm discs in the AP kits should fit under 17's. I ask this as I understand they require spacers, but we used to use these size discs on my Scooby.

I've just found that 17's can fit Cupra brakes. Some guys here (Poland) have winter tyres and 17's on their Cupras. This may require spacers (depends on wheels model).

It would be a real push to fit the 356mm discs under 17's. The only concern wiuld be the tyres rubbing the arches.

That's why not every 17's will fit. There should be some space between wheel arms and calipers, but ET shouldn't be to low.

Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas on the trype/make of brake pad that would be best to fit. Should I just stick with the OEM parts or look at different makes and are they worth the extra money?

Thanks!
Si

I've got Alcons being fitted this week to my MKV Golf, would it help if I were to post up pics and requirements (spacers etc)

The pricing has changed for '09 too, they're £1800+ now

On a rear end matter, has anyone fitted R32/S3 rears yet??

When changing the rear brake pads, do you require vag-com to reset anything?

Thanks
