GPS antenna

Right, I'm going to start with an apology because I'm pretty sure I've seen some decent suggestions for this before, but despite best efforts and lots of searching, I can't find the threads.

Anyhow, my Zenec NC-2010 arrived today and, so far, I'm rather pleased with it, although it's not fitted properly yet, partly because it's dark and cold, but also because I haven't got any U-nuts to hold it in place. What I can't quite decide on however is where to put the GPS antenna. I'm sure somebody mentioned theirs is installed in the dash somewhere, which would make life fairly easy for me.

So, question is, where did you stick yours? Ooh matron!

Nice choice, was this the one I saw finish very cheaply on ebay last weekend?

Where I have it now in the Tiguan is on top of the HU itself.

This is not possible in the Altea (by the way, the box section behind the stereo is a joke so be prepared for a ton of plastic rattling), I had mine behind the glovebox on an unsued support, never had an issue in two years.

I think it probably was; ended up paying about £280 with the postage and it's absolutely immaculate; practically new, unbutchered cables, boxed, well looked after. I'd have paid a good bit more; amazed I didn't have to!

I'll have a look at that position tomorrow; thanks for the suggestion. I need to fit the microphone and input box too, but they're looking fairly straightforward. That said, it's a bloomin' tight fit in there for the original head unit, never mind one with all those wires.

Actually, there's a thought; need to run cables for the rear screen too...

To be honest you are probably better trying the internal mic, we never had an issue with it. However to get it to work make sure you need a small purple plug with wires that loop into itself to work the internal mic.

You won't get any of those cables really behind the HU itself, they squeeze out at the left side edge (well, the way I routed them), but the cables are barely long enough meaning plastic on plastic contact. Hopefully you figure something out!

I might give the internal a try then; it (the head unit) won't be getting fixed in properly until I've done the software updates, if only because it seems you need to drop power from the unit afterwards. Weird.

And I don't do rattles! I think some careful wrapping of connectors with a light foam may be in order; in the best Blue Peter style, of course...

Where did you read about removing power? There is indeed a set sequence for doing the updates that you'll see on their website, but it always worked fine after a reset for me.

It was mentioned in a good few of the update guides on Zenec's site, but I must confess it seemed a bit weird; they actually suggest dropping the negative from the vehicle battery for five minutes. I couldn't decide if there was method in the madness or if it was just madness!

with the kenwood i found an online install guide in german which showed it at the very front of the dash where the bottom of the windscreen joins , i think i ran the cable down behind the glove box and then tucked it in all the way along , i did get a small metal self adhesive square to put on the dash to affix it to

my instructions said it need just the windscreen & no metal blocking the sensor

I was going to tie-wrap it to the top of a target large piece of metal just above the glove-box, but apparently it's rather magnetic and it just stick itself there of its own accord! Works a treat though.

Skard; I'm a little confused. I've connected the cars aerial into the TMC box, which then connects to the aerial input on the head unit. The Zenec seems quite weak on the auto-retuning front though and doesn't seem as good as the standard head-unit at locking onto a station when you're on the move. I don't suppose you noticed the same at all?

I should add that I've tried a direct connection to the aerial (no TMC) but that makes no notable difference.

To be honest, I don't listen to any radio stations so wouldn't be the best to ask, but the wife never complains about losing the frequency. We live in a big valley and still get a radio reception where most cars don't.

If I recall there should be a power antenna box with it that amplifies your radio signal http://shop1.acr.ch/product_info.php?products_id=1229&XTCsid=ais7mf3cood1di9u1b8mf14pr7

The TMC is for traffic alerts during navigation.

Reception in the stock head unit was cracking, but on reflection, the aerial input on the Zenec had some play in it, so I'm wondering it something's come loose when I've fitted it, leading to the poor reception.

The way to check is, of course, to take the thing out and check. I may give that one a miss for the time being, at least until the leads for the video out and sub out have arrived; I'd rather just have to take the unit out once, rather than twice, especially given how much of a pain the fascia was to get on!

to get the surround out a 2 inch paint scraper is good , to get it back ,push the clips in the holes , start at the bottom right hand corner & push gently round anti clock wise ,

then get cross and thump it
